Hi everyone,

Just moved here from GA and need to register our vehicles. I've been told we have to get a safety and emissions test done, unforunately. We'll be living in Layton, so can anyone out there recommend a good place to get this done? Does every place that does it charge the same or do they have competitive prices?

Thanks,
Steve

No competition I think due to deregulated system. They can charge an arm and a leg for 5 minutes of work.
All they do on our cars, is plug into that port and that is all.
Both our cars have California specs.

About the only way to get *a break* is to go first to a reputable place, ask round in the neighbourhood where you live, and then hope they send you a discount flyer for the next check.

The place we go (have to go to) on 54 south, seeds out discount flyers all the time.

Finally after all these years caught a break from the safety and emissions check. They didn't require it on my Camry Hybrid so I just paid the tax part. Sweeeeeet

Also, check the state's website as only certain model years need safety inspections (I think it's basically alternating years). Ours didn't require one since 2007 model years are exempt this year. The place doing your inspection should know which years are required to be inspected but I tend not to be too trusting on things like that.

I didn't see anything like that for emissions testing though so you'll need to have that one done.

This is what I paid in 2013 in SL county for my 2008 coupe:

2013

Age-based Fee 110.00

Registration Fee 44.25

Corridor Preservation Fee 10.00

SLCounty air pollution control fee 3.00

Driver's Education Fee 2.50

Uninsured Motorists Fee 1.00

Total Due Tax Commission 170.75

Emissions & Safety Inspection 0.00 (didn't have to pay the $35 fee for this in 2013)

***************************

Age-Based Fees (page 19 shows these fees for 2013 passenger vehicles & light trucks):

Age of Vehicle

Less than 3 years $150
3 or more years but less than 6 years $110
6 or more years but less than 9 years $80
9 or more years but less than 12 years $50
12 or more years $10

Interesting policy. Seems bass-ackwards to me. I'd think that there would be an incentive to tax older vehicles at higher rates to encourage newer vehicles meeting tougher emissions and fuel economy standards. This strategy does exactly the opposite. They should invert the fee column and add another zero for good measure. Then sit back and watch the inversions improve.

I couldn't agree with you more. There is NO incentive to get the old trucks and cars that spew more junk into the air OFF the road. And the penalize the newer cleaner output ones. Ahhh perhaps it's the Utah way
