I have a new commute from Draper to Orem. I purchased an Express Pass so I could use the express lane, hoping it helps. I drive about 30~ miles.

Well, I-15 is 65mph. Clearly no one drives that speed. Since the express lane is 65mph as well, I try to only go about 68mph so I'm not completely blocking traffic. But it's a single lane with double white lines, which means people aren't supposed to cross the lines to enter/exit the lane.

Problem is, most people like to drive 75-80. I stick to the speed limit, I'd set the cruise right at 65mph but then I'm going so much slower I just have people driving around me non stop. But if I use the express lane and drive the speed limit, cars just speed right up behind me and are stuck riding my bumper since I think they'd prefer going 75-80.

Is this a big problem around point of the mountain and the stretch from there to Orem? I really am not comfortable going that far over the speed limit, but I also realize that the express lane doesn't allow for (legal) passing.

So is the option to just not use the lane, which I paid for, or accept that the speed limit is 65 and if people want to go faster, to do it in the regular lanes?

I really hate this commute.

............. must resist flaming, MUST RESIST.

If traffic is moving faster than you like, then you should get in the far right lane and go as slow as you like.

This option. Just don't use the lane and get in the far right lane.

My only qualifier is: If there is a ton of traffic and everyone is going horribly slow because of an accident (or just rush hour), that's the best time for you to use your paid pass since you won't be hitting 65 mph anyways and will end up saving time.

I am not really going "slow" though, I'm going 5pm OVER the speed limit. The express pass isn't a fast lane, right? Or is it expected that 80mph is the real speed limit, including the express lane.

I don't see how you'd flame someone for going 5mph over.

Forget all the nit-picky stuff about how much over the limit you are. Sounds like you want to drive slower than the average traffic flow and you want to be a kind of traffic law vigilante by forcing everybody else to drive as fast as you do. If that's the case then expect to be tailgated, passed on the right and flamed. It's that simple.

I'm not a traffic vigilante - If I'm in the express lane going 70 and someone comes up going 85 - I can't switch lanes until there is a break in the double white lines.

Clearly this is the wrong place to post. Mods, please delete this thread as it is pointless.

What it does point out is that *Traffic Rule* in Utah is a Philosophy !
It is not going to change, so get used to it, or move over, or drive the speed limit on the far right.
That is what I do most of the time (I can not afford to pay for the possible infraction fine).

After a while you adjust your starting time, in order to get where you want to be, *on time*.

Or ... , you can do the math!

Assume a 20 mile trip.
At 80 miles an hour it will take you 15 minutes.
At 60 miles an hour it will take you 20 minutes.

That is only 5 minutes longer ! For pete's sake !

Just because you didn't get the answer you wanted doesn't mean it's the wrong place to post.
You asked and were answered.

Here is a quote from the handy-dandy web site I found thanks to Southern Belle:

What do I do if other motorists drive too slow or too fast in the Express Lanes?
Follow the speed limit. The Express Lane is not a passing lane. The speed limit on I-15 is 65 mph and the majority of traffic is flowing at this speed. UDOT and the Utah Highway Patrol do not authorize vehicles to travel at speeds faster than the posted speed limit.
The Utah Highway Patrol watches specifically for motorists who are driving too slow, driving too fast, tailgating or exhibiting other Express Lane violations. This includes drivers in the general-purpose lanes who fail to allow drivers in the Express Lanes to merge.

Not surprising in any way. Even less surprising is that the UHP doesn't authorize speeding and speeders get pulled over in all lanes. But I'm curious. Has anybody ever heard of somebody actually being pulled over for going to slowly or tailgating? (I don't count some obvious psychotic going 25 mph on the interstate)
