Hello! We are arriving into SLC late March on the way up to ski in Alta. We will get there about 1:30 pm, would love to stay overnight in a fun, walkable area, with some good food and drinks (pub?) near the hotel? Is downtown a choice? Hotel preferably on the cheap side. Hopefully this isn't a tall order! We have never been to Utah before... We're married 30-year olds from Nashville with no kids, and really casual-no fancy stuff here.

I rarely go downtown. The only pubs I know of are Desert Edge at Trolley Square or Squatters. Keys on Main is a fun, loud piano bar....but I think you need reservations for that place.

Our light rain system is called TRAX. Depending on where you stay and which pub/bar/restaurant you end up at, it might help to get you back to your hotel room after a few drinks. I'm guessing you'll be renting a car at the airport, but if you're not, you could also take TRAX (green line) from the airport to downtown SLC.

Maybe some info in City Weekly as far as what to do, where to go, where to dine, etc. Depending on what's showing, Brewvies Cinema Pub could be a place to go have some beers, snacks & watch a movie.

Have a fun ski trip.

Our downtown area is relatively small and compact - with much to see and do within a 4-block area. It is easily walkable (but the bus is free within the downtown zone). There are many good restaurants and bars downtown - too many to list here.

Yes, stay downtown in one of the 2-3 star budget hotels and walk or ride TRAX to pubs or other restaurants or bars. A few pubs and pub-like places in the downtown area you might consider:
Squatters, 147 West Broadway (300 South)
Red Rock, 254 South 200 West
Bayou, 645 South State Street
Epic (no food, but GREAT beer), 825 South State Street
Poplar Street, 242 South 200 West
Beer Hive, 128 South Main Street
Desert Edge, Trolley Square (~550 South 600 East)
Green Pig, 31 East 400 South

Pretty good list there by Zionide, Bayou and Beer Hive have a lot of craft brews and are pretty laid back. Green Pig occasionally has live acts. Only 3 I've been to thus far.

Was at Fiddler's Elbow in sugarhouse for st. patty's day, that was pretty good too.

can you give me a list of the hotels in the areas with these pubs? Thanks!

These pubs are all downtown, so any downtown/CBD hotel in SLC that is not an airport hotel is "in the area." They range from the 4-5 star (Grand America, Hotel Monaco) to the decidedly budget (Metropolitan Inn, Motel 6, etc.) with everything in between (two Marriotts, a Hilton, a Radisson, a Red Lion, a Sheraton, a Residence Inn).

If you can be more specific about what you're looking far in regard to star-level, budget, and type of accommodations, we may be able to help. Is a hostel acceptable? Do you like B&Bs? Corporate properties only?

Thanks for the help. We booked Crystal Springs hotel downtown, looks walking distance to some of the places you listed. Squatter's and Red Rock is an 8 minute walk, and the hotel has free airport shuttle, so we have that too, as the shuttle for Alta will pick us up at the airport.

Oh, and you can probably walk over to the Trax courthouse and ride the train a couple of stops if you're so inclined as it's free downtown.
