I have 2 children who recently got invited to the magnet program at morningside. I heard some pretty negative things from another parent about the teachers and about the behavior and language of student attending morningside who is not in the magnet program. Can any one share their personal experiences or what they've heard.

How about cottonwood elementary?

Good lord, does nobody have any experience with Morningside? My husband and I have read the review at greatschools.org, and have seen how it's ranked on ksl.com (number 1, in case you were wondering.) We're not in Granite, but if anyone has any additional info about Morningside we'd like to know too!

And can this turn into a rant ... are Utahns as concerned about education (like, beyond SLCC or UofU or BYU) as we are? Education might be the ONLY reason my husband and I would consider moving once our kids reach grades 6-8. Yes, parental involvement is key - we've got that nailed - but an overwhelming lack of, well, academic concerns, from peers, is very important.

Please, flame away and tell me how wrong I am about Utah!!!!

Hi,

I was able to get more information about the magnet program. It follows the Utah State's standard core curriculum. Instructions are at a accelerated rate, and the children are assigned more independent projects and the focus on each subject is more indepth than the regular classrooms. However, at the end of the school year, the kids in the magnet program and the regular classrooms end up in the page of the textbook. So, they are not ahead of everyone else, which does not make sense since this program is supposed to be for the gifted and talented. And this is across the board, whether you live in SLC proper, Canyons District or Granite District. In any event, another helpful information is that there are children who are autistic, Tourette Syndrome, etc who get tested in. Some parents are bothered by it as their kids are constantly distracted throughout the day. Some parents welcome the diversity as it gives their kids an opportunity to learn compassion and empathy. Hope this helps.

Sounds like they are ahead of everyone else where it counts---in knowledge and learning---since they've independently explored each subject more in-depth.

Based lack of response it's not a leap to conclude that the answer is a resounding "no." Educational aspirations are pretty thin.
