Default Utah for a Non LDS Christian

Hello,

I'm a new teacher from MI looking at UT for a job. I'm fine with living in heavy mormon areas, but I also need a place where I can find good non-LDS christian community. My background is Reformed and Baptist, but I'm fine with any conservative Protestant denomination. Where are the best chances of findinig non-LDS churches and christians in Utah? Can anyone recommend some places?

thanks!

Mackinac81

Hi, Mackinac81!

I attend a non-denom church in Layton that is awesome. PM me and I will give you their website. There is also a very large Baptist church in South Ogden that I've heard many good things about. I could give you their website as well.

As for finding a non-LDS community, it's just not going to happen in Utah. Don't worry, this is not a bad thing. We have our differences, but they have great values and have a very family-friendly society. If you want diversity, I would suggest looking around Hill Air Force Base. The Air Force brings in many different people, so the area is more diverse and accepting to those of other faiths.

Like I said, if you want any specifics regarding the Layton area, or my church, feel free to PM me.

We will be moving to the Ogden area & I was wondering about this too! We are very involved in a large (non-denominational) Christian church here & just hate to leave that behind...

Ogden is very close to Layton (only about 10-15 minutes depending on the location in Ogden). I know people worry about this when moving to Utah, I certainly did 14 years ago, but there are other faiths here. Obviously, it is predominantly LDS, but like I said, there are many other churches to be found. The church I attend is non-denom, but is very similar to Assembly of God. Weekly attendance averages around the 1,100 mark. Not a mega church, but not a small one either. There are many different ministries offered for the entire family. The Baptist church in S. Ogden is similar in size (I believe), and they have many ministries as well. Let me know if you want the websites, I'll be happy to send them to you.

Oh, I wasn't looking for a non-LDS town! I know full well that won't happen. Besides, Mormons are good, decent people, at least the ones I've met. They'd make great neighbors I'm sure.

Agreed...once we got here, we realized there was nothing to worry about.

I am a little surprised what a big deal the LDS / non-LDS issue is here (on these boards)...is it really such a huge issue? I have been to UT numerous times (family in St. George, Layton, & Salt Lake City) and even lived there for a short time (about 25 years ago though) and never thought of it as a problem.
Now that I have children I worry about them fitting in or feeling 'different' and I worry about finding a new church home but I don't worry about "the mormon influence"...always kinda thought of that as a good thing.

There is no problem. The crud that is posted on this board regarding the Mormon vs. non-Mormon issue is primarily the product of people, who use these boards as entertainment and need to create a controversy so there will be something to write about. Watch what happens when they read this post. They will howl with derision, but it will give them something to do until it’s time to watch their favorite soap.

I agree with this. I've lived here for awhile, I am not LDS and I've never had a problem. I'm sure things happen, but they are not constant or the norm. The thing you just have to remember is that people are people, no matter what religion they belong to. You are going to run across nice Mormons and you might run across not-so-nice Mormons. The same holds true at any Baptist, Methodist, Non-denom, Catholic, or Presbeterian church. I wouldn't let the controversy on this forum be cause for worry about a move to Utah.

I have a feeling "the Mormon influence" might be more of an issue for non-religious people than for people of other religions. But I think a lot of people bring it up simply because they have heard that the area is very "Mormon" and they are wondering if they should be concerned about that or not.

There may be some truth to this, but it seems to me like the majority of people are here to try to get or to share info. about the area, and this topic comes up a lot because people are genuinely curious about it. And a few people seem to have had negative expereinces. You seem to make a lot critcal or condescending remarks (maybe also to stir up controversy? ), and that really isn't any more helpful than people spewing "crud" now, is it? Can't we all just play nice?
