Sugarhouse and Cottonwood Heights
We came out to visit SLC this weekend. Really enjoyed the city although it was Very COLD. The mountains are absolutely beautiful. We definitely want to stay closer into the city and checked out a lot of the neighborhoods. We like Sugarhouse and Cottonwood Heights the best. The Avenues are nice, but would probably be out of our price range. Anyone willing to give feedback on these two areas and your opinions would be great. Also, which one has the better school system?

Cottonwood Heights just voted to form a new school district and form a police department and break off from the Sheriff's office. The school's in Cottonwood Heights have some of the best scores in the state. The middle school I went to (Butler Middle School) had the highest test scores in the state last year.

Homes
I like both areas a lot but biased to the East Bench. I like Sugarhouse a lot b/c I come from the East Coast and those homes have the feel of New England style homes. Sugarhouse is nice but you are on top of your neighbors and the homes are more expensive. You will get more for your $ in Cottonwood Heights and if you ski, you are so close to Alta and Snowbird. I chose to live in Sandy. Have you checked it out. I just recently purchased a house for under 300,000 that has 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, 2560 sq. ft.
Just a suggestion if you are looking at Cottonwood Heights why not look in Sandy and amazing views of the mountains. Good luck!

Thanks, ok so not knowing the area very well. Where is Sandy in comparison to Cottonwood Heights? What is the approximate drive time to the University and is it close to the interstate? How are the schools in Sandy? Thanks so much for all your advice, it is hard to make decisions on a move when you don't live anywhere near the area!

Both Sandy and cottonwood heights are excellent areas. Cottonwood heights you can get close to the mountains cheaper than in sandy but sandy isn't far enough away to matter

First, this has been one of the best winters in years!!! Its been fairly mild in temp. and snowing a ton which everyone should be phyced on because its keeping the inversions out and guaranteeing us some water for summer.
If you don't like the cold this could be a hard place for you as most mid to northern states in the US, although Utah has pretty mild winters (temps).
I'd say Sugarhouse and Sandy/Cottonwood heights are very different. Do you want to be right in the city? Then Sugarhouse. If you want to be closer to skiing (mountains) and a little up and out of the city Sandy/CH (that area is also nicer when we are sitting in inversions).

Don't worry I have only lived in Phoenix for a couple of years...before that I was in Michigan so I understand the cold. Just with my thin blood from Phoenix it seemed extra cold.
I am definitely looking for a place that is extremely family friendly, good schools, close to the mountains. I would like a place where kids can play outside comfortably with not much traffic. It sounds like Cottonwood/Sandy is more to my liking right now.
How is the housing market there right now? It is SO bad in Phoenix

I live right in the heart of Sugarhouse and I love it. I have a potential job offer up in Park City and I'm just not sure how I'm going to make it work since I really don't want to give up my Sugarhouse location!
I love that it is just a quick drive anywhere; 5 minutes downtown, 5 minutes to the U, 15 minutes to the airport, 20 minutes to Park City, 20 minutes (depending where you go) to Sandy. I love having the freeway access right there.
I have no idea about the school systems since I'm not from here and didn't go to school here. I just love the community vibe in Sugarhouse. I'd be sad to leave it if I decide to move to Park City.

Right now, the market is soft in Sandy. In general, homes over $300,000 are taking longer to sell and sellers are having to take price concessions. Between Cottonwood Heights and Sandy, I would take Sandy because they are more financially secure and offer more recreational opportunities. I suggest you take a look at Sandy's website: Sandy City:*Home.
