Look into Sugurhouse, Avenues, Millcreek, Highland areas, even Olympus Cove. These are the pricier areas in SLC yet compared to Boston you'll be amazed by what you get for your money. Word of wisdom, in my experience these areas can be quite competitive for rentals. However, compared to a major metro area like Boston this probably is a much more laid back environment. Just make to sure if you want to live in a "hip" desirable area near downtown I'd start your search several months ahead of time and try to get in all your paperwork before the house is even put up for a new lease. A lot of people are saying no to the burbs and thats fair enough. I currently live in Sandy (home of Big Love and magnet for snickers from anyone living closer to the city) and being in my late twenties I'm finding it a little too "white bread." That being said the area is beautiful, people are friendly, it has everything you could ever need in a practical sense, still only 15-20 minutes from the city, and what I'm paying for a 5 bedroom 2 car garage house in an incredibly nice neighborhood almost feels illegal compared to what I'm used to living the majority of my life in the twin cities area. The amount you were paying in Boston would get you more than you could probably imagine in the SLC area. I encourage your move because I love this place with all my heart and I've met so many east coasters out here who wouldn't trade it for the world, just keep its loveliness a secret once you get here
