What mining-specific skills do you bring to the part? But more to the point, why? Unless I'm quite mistaken, the vast majority of underground mining in UT is coal. The long term outlook for coal is not good for a variety of well known reasons. Even the Chinese are trying to get away from coal. You're trying to start some kind of a career in a rapidly declining industry.

Exactly. I saw this too. Seems like looking for a job making buggy whips ca. 1915.

Dude, don't. As a former mine geologist, just don't. Coal mining is a dying industry and I am happy about that. Let's keep it that way. That being said, there are other things that can be mined and mining will never go away, but most of them are surface mined. There is some underground metals mining planned at the Bingham Canyon mine in Southwest Salt Lake, but for the most part the mining industry, as a whole, is in survival mode right now. Nobody is hiring. Even commodity prices for metals, agricultural minerals, and rare earth elements are still low, and have been since about 2014.

If you're still interested in getting into that industry, which will undoubtebly rebound over the next 10 years (and then crash again in 20, because mining is boom/bust), I can certainly talk with you more and field more specific questions. What do you want to mine? What part of the state are you interested in? Would you mine in another state? Are you a geologist or mining engineer or more of a blue-collar and operations guy?
