Default Winter in Salt Lake City

Hello all.

Just curious as to what a typical winter in SLC is like. I am more concerned about amount of snow/ice than the cold temperatures.

I am planning a move for a job in Orem, but would like to commute from one of the 'hip'er neighbourhoods downtown.

I've driven through SLC many times over the past three years in all kinds of weather. Unless you just love lots of excitement slipping and sliding in the ice and snow, I suggest you find a place close to work to live. Even then, things shall get a bit exciting at times!

Hi Karl,

I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada so driving on ice is a four month of the year affair. Hopefully winter driving season is shorter in Utah.

Cheers

Default Winter Commute and the Point of the Mountain

The winter driving season is typically from December to February (sometimes earlier). I think the major "roadblock" you will face is the Point of the Mountain on I-15. In the middle of a storm, it gets treacherous. Your commute time, in good weather, and depending on where you live in Salt Lake, could be over an hour. I agree with the other post that you should consider moving somewhere in Utah County. While I haven't had this drive to deal with, I have known people who have done it, and they say it gets tiring fast.

I live downtown and have had to give up commuting, even to Draper, because I am afraid of the sudden snow showers that can sometimes blow in out of nowhere.
