Moving from Dallas to Farmington, Utah area
My husband has just accepted a new job in SLC, Utah, but will be working in Farmington, Utah. We are both 35 and non-LDS, with 2 kids (13yr-girl & 6yr-boy). I am wondering about the Farmington area as far as diversity, especially in the schools for my kids. I have also had people tell me about living on the east side of the hwy because of better schools, social enviroment, etc. Is there really a difference as to living on either side of the hwy? The house we are looking at is on 1/2 acre, but on the west side just north of Farmington. Also, I drive in Dallas traffic everyday for almost an hour each way, will the commute from North Farmington to Salt Lake City be any easier for me? Thanks so much!

txfamily,
I used to live in Mesquite, so I have an idea of what you are talking about regarding Dallas. Farmington and SLC are identical to Rockwall and Dallas in relation to distance and driving conditions. If you are going to live in Farmington since your husband will be working there, traffic should not be an issue. Your religion should not be an issue either, either. That would be the least of my concern. Your kids will do just fine. If you are involved in your kids's school and the PTA, your kids will do better because of that not because they are heathens (smile).
Hope this helps

Thank you so much! My kids can be heathens (smile), but they are so excited about this move because there is so much more to do as far as outdoors than here in Dallas and my husband is from Montana (me from Georgia), so they are eager to learn what being an "outdoorsey" people is like. How long of a drive is it from Farmington to SLC? I'll be looking for a job once we get settled and would love to not have to fight traffic like I35 ever again.

Depends...during rush hour or not? If it is not during rush hour, it would only take about 15-20 minutes. If it is during rush hour, depending on what part of SLC, it could take around 40-45 minutes.

Other than being clueless about Texas, I agree.
I live very close to Farmington. Are you looking at an older property? I'm asking because I've been hearing alot about flooding over there in the new homes. Also, in W Farmington is the jail and courthouse. I do NOT think there is an issue of criminals milling around, and there isn't anywhere to congregate, but you might want to know. Even though geographically the E and W are so close, the E side is suburban while the W is more rural. Both close to the highway, and good location being halfway between SLC and Ogden.
We're "non", but have been totally accepted and welcomed. We think we hit the jackpot, great place and great people.
And I second getting involved at school!!

Thanks for the flooding info. The house we are looking at is off W State St /Clark Lane (very end)...any flooding in that area? Also, what do you think of the schools in Farmington? Thanks!

Farmington has excellent schools. I would be a little concerned about the drive, because coming into SLC from Davis County in the mornings is terrible. But if you're not driving during rush hour, it's not bad at all. I have a friend who lives there and takes the bus into SLC, saves lots of stress, they can use the commuter lane, and he can get some work done during the drive.

I would also take a look at the property and ask the real estate agent to research the area for more information you would like to know. The agent can give you the demographic make up of the area, properties sold in the area, schools, etc. The morning rush hour from Farmington to SLC is the same as I-35 morning or evening rush hour. It is because there is only one freeway going North to South (I-15). Soon, there will be another expressway to relieve the pressure but it may open by the time you are ready to move in. Bus system works fairly well too.

Was there another road/expressway opening up going into SLC? I thought I might of read something about it, but I don't remember where. How long to you think the bus takes? Thanks so much!

I'm not sure when the other highway will be opening.
There is another option with the Trax system that is putting in the Commuter Rail from Salt Lake to Ogden. It should be opening soon. Both the commuter rail and the busses are run by UTA and their link is below. It should be able to give you all of the info you need.
Welcome to UTA
