My girlfriend is graduating with her AuD from Purdue in Audiology, and we have looked into the Provo/SLC area as a possible landing area. What we are looking for: Rural-ish area for road cycling, affordable living (not a mobile home, but it doesn’t need have to be the ritz. One small corgi dog, no kids. We are wanting to spend the next few years paying off student loans/ living frugally. I don’t really know what areas to start looking. Not religious and don’t need a nightlife, we pretty much keep to ourselves. We would prefer a 1br/1br house but if it’s not possible that’s fine. A secure area would also be nice.

Provo is not advised for anyone not LDS as the influence is so strong. Anywhere around SLC would likely be more receptive to newcomers.

Are there any particular neighborhoods for renting affordably around SLC suburbs?

You know, "affordable" is really a pretty subjective term. If you could tell us what "affordable" means to you, perhaps we'd have an easier time helping you out.

There are plenty of road biking options in/around SLC. The rest should depend on where you expect to work.

Affordable means the cheapest we can reasonably expect to pay while not living in a shady part of town. Ideally keeping rent under 700/mo and working at the local university.

$700/mo will get you basics. Not high end. Also depends on where you want to live, how many rooms, etc.
Having a dog will cost you more in rent.
Road biking is popular here and plenty of places to go. MTB is much more popular with plenty of opportunities.

The entire Wasatch front is getting pretty built up, crowded. Plus anywhere outside of SLC is likely to be very LDS. Cost of living is getting higher in this area.

Okay great, basics is really what we’re looking for honestly. We currently live in a 1br/1ba and are perfectly happy. We just have no idea where to look, and want to avoid bad areas. So keeping it under 800 would be more feasible?

"Provo is not advised for anyone not LDS as the influence is so strong"

What does that mean to a newcomer though
