Pioneer Day is tomorrow, July 24. Most everything will be closed for the celebration. Today's paper had a listing of the events and the street closings for the parade and marathon. It's a truly big deal to people who grew up here, celebrating thsir pioneer heritage. The morning TV shows will cover the parade, pre-empting the regular programming. Fire works are allowed, starting a few days before, just like 4th of July. There should be a lot of frieworks tonight as Liberty Park, among others, will have a fireworks show.

About 100,000 people show up for the parade. Since I'm from New Orleans, that number doesn't really get my attention, before Karina Mardi Gras Day would see close to 500,000 out for the various parades. But it's a big number for Utah.

When we first arrived in Utah, mid-July, we knew nothing about Pioneer Day! We couldn't figure out why everything was closed! And we stumbled upon the festivities at Liberty Park. Every year since then, including today, we've gone there.

Ok, so this whole Pioneer Day thing is totally new to me. I was really surprised to hear on the news this morning that people camped out Wednesday night in order to secure a primo spot around the parade route. I had no idea this holiday was so huge!!!
It seems like the parade and festivities were bigger than the 4th of July! |

This is what gets me. Hardly anyone set off fireworks for the 4th around here..but my gosh last night you would have though we were celebrating it. Ugh

The city will move the 4th fireworks shows if it happens to fall on a Monday ("family" night) but not the 24th - that is on the right day no matter what. And except for the fireworks shows, the 24th is a bigger celebration than the 4th.

To me that is ridiculous. The 4th is something that all Americans should be proud of and celebrate with all their heart.

I'm pretty sure if the 4th was on a Monday they would still have fireworks on a Monday. I have heard that on Sundays they do change the fireworks night here some times. But again, not having lived here when the 4th was on a Sunday, I can't say for sure. I'm afraid there might be some unfounded internet inuendo and rumors starting here. |
