Question Any one on Layton?

I also asked this on the Utah board:

We recently put an offer in for a house in East Layton and while I impatiently wait to hear form the seller I did a little searching online about Layton. I came across a site that talks about the code enforcements in the area which mentions that there is a limit of two dogs or two cats or one of each per household. Does anyone know if this is really the case? That would be a big issue for us since we currently have 3 dogs and 3 cats. They are all a part of our family and would without a doubt be coming with us. I would hate to give up this house but my fur babies are important to me. If anyone knows could you please get back to me? We may have to recind our offer if this is the case. Thank you all for all the wonderful information you provide on this list.

I think I can help you on this one. I worked for the city of Layton for 8 years in the very department that regulates this. I don't work there now as I moved to Oklahoma in the past year. The rule states that you can have one dog, one cat, OR two cats OR two dogs. In other words two total. The only exception to this rule is if you have a kennel license. There are very few kennel licenses in the City of Layton and most of them are in the more rural areas out in West Layton (which isn't so rural anymore). The entire time I worked there I never saw one kennel license issued to anyone. Layton has very strict laws. It's a great city to live in however, I also lived there for 11 years. I would hate to discourage you from buying the home, but if you have to have all of your animals, you might have a problem. There is a Code Enforcement Department that drives around enforcing these laws. However other cities have the same types of laws. So it's a good idea to call each city and ask. Feel free to DM me if you have other questions.

Another great messed up law of Utah..how can a city tell you how many pets you can have geesh. I have heard of breed restrictions in certain developments but never a city telling you how many you can have. Maybe the cities should do this with how many kids one can have..lol

Cities all over the country have codes determining the numbers and types of pets people can have. To say it’s a “messed up” Utah law is entirely inaccurate. For what its worth, my neighbors across the street got a kennel license and they have a camel. That's because their land is zoned agricultural. It really depends on how the land is zoned. And pretty much any town has zoning requirements.

Default Sigh

I am so distressed over what to do now about this. My hubby called all excited this morning that he has the signed offer from the seller in his hand and they are accepting our offer. He was deflated when I told him about the pet law. He still wants the house and frankly so do I. We just don't know what to do about the pets. I may be able to convince my parents to take one of the dogs, but my son who really doesn't want to move in the first place would be devistated if we didn't take his cats with us. I just don't know what to do

Ok I can understand with a camel, but not owning more than 2 dogs or cats. Geesh. And not any city I know of in Maryland has zones saying how many you can have, only breed restrictions. If you are a licensed breeder yes, but if you only own them as pets no

Two of my cats look alike but each of the dogs are very different. I am just wondering how strictly the city enforces this law or is it more on a "if the neighbors complain" basis. I don't want to be non-compliant but how could I possibly abandon my fur babies? This is all so frustrating.

I agree with NewtoUtah. I'd guess its only if the neighbors complain. It's probably enforced for the extreme cases -- when someone has really vicious dogs or 17 cats etc. Not that I'm encouraging you to become a scofflaw ...

I would just do it and than be like i had not a clue. I would drive thru there in the evening and see if anyone has more than one dog and such. you know not everyone gets licenses or such for family pets. Ugh..i wish i could tell u more...did u call the city of layton and see how strict the rule is??? i mean if you are the old lady with a gazzillion cats and u don't take care of them then im sure your neighbors will complain but like i said before...hiding is easy easy..lol
