I was on a 35 -40 miles road on state street getting close to south town center at Sandy. No, I wasn’t try to make it a point to the fast driver at all, just trying to find my way to the destination, didn’t even realize the driver was in the back of me till he stepped on his gass, of course with a super loud engine noise to pass me from my back to my front with his middle finger up in the air and swearing at the same time. Don’t want to be too specific on where our community pool is. Our baby on board decal was placed on from the previous state where we’re from, didn’t get the chance to take it off if that’s not very necessary here in Utah.

Leave the decal on, I'd say. As for the original question, the state, especially the Wasatch Front, is far from the monolithic theocracy people present on this board. You have to remember, most people are asking questions based on the stereotypes they have heard, which in essence then becomes a perpetuating echo effect.

Having moved here from the Washington DC area, I can say there certainly is more of the cowboy and rebel element (trying to describe it euphemistically) than back there. I have to admit I’m sometimes surprised by the extent of it. And in some senses, I think it reflects the religious divide present in our community. There are certainly many exceptions, but I think many people either try too hard to identify themselves with the clean-cut and “proper” majority, or with the “rebellious” minority.

You will get a little bit different vibe wherever you go in Utah. In the avenues it is intilectual and sophisticated. In east sandy it's barbie looks and materialism. In park city its "I'm rich and not mormon!". In Provo it is blessed rightousness. Obviously these are gross generalizations and don't apply to everyone in these areas, but that is the vibe I get. You seem to have landed in a part of town where the vibe is "I am not religious and I am going to make that fact painfully obvious".

If you are considering staying here, I would recommend that you take some time to get to know the different areas and find one that is comfortable for you. About being aisian, I wouldn't be too concerned about that. I have never seen a bias against aisians here in Utah.

Concerning driving people here seem to take on a differerent personality when they get behind the wheel. There are alot of aggressive drivers here and there are also plenty of clueless drivers to irritate the aggressive ones.

There's your problem: you were going the speed limit! You always should go at least ten above the limit here in Utah so as to not get dirty looks.

how could I go so fast, if i'm trying to look for places, never drove at that side before. no matter what, i don't think anyone deserves a middle finger..that's sad about life, that driver will never understand what the slow driver is going through, maybe she/he is trying to look for a place, maybe they're lost, maybe they drive slow due to old age, maybe an infant is in the car, there's so many factors about the human being in that slower car. but mad drivers don't care and just take it as a another 'metal' car, another object who's in his way, who cares what happened in side of that car, let's just curse at it. if we were walking on the streets, you think he'll do that to me? less likely, because he can see me, but not in the car in that metal box...

I don't speed at all and I personally don't care if anyone gives me the finger because I will be rude right back...doesn't matter to me none. I lived on the East Coast and that is an everyday happening so it doesn't phase me..this traffic around here could all handle a driving school refresher course..i have seen rude drivers, and Im sure thats why my insurance tripled moving here

the problem is, when people are rude to me, I'm afraid to speak up or like u said be rude back. I worry what if I get killed by being rude back, so I prefer to remain silent, what if he has a gun in his truck/car? I have a baby to worry for.. so I hide these feelings inside of me, just take all the bad stuff that happens to me and swallow the pain, that's why I get really depressed...sorry..off topic again.

Basically, Utah drivers suck. I try to avoid the freeway like the plague (I absolutely refuse to go down I-80 from State to 13th) and any orange barrels. Hopefully there aren't too many overzealous NRA members on the streets of Salt Lake. Then again, riding in the back of a taxi from Kennedy Airport to Midtown through the Van Wyck and the LIE makes Utah look tame.
