Cursing, drinking, tattoos, piercing..etc. acceptable in Utah?
Just out of curiosity and no offense here. Before when we heard about Utah, because it’s a religious place, people don’t curse and are very conservative in this state, however after we have been to this place. Here’s what I have observed:
1. I’m new to the roads here, so I drove a bit slower than the rest, there was a man in his truck, cursing and gave me the middle finger when he drove by, even when I have a baby on board sticker on my bumper. (no sympathy over a mother who needs to drive carefully with her infant.) Another time when I had to drive slow for the same reasons, a man gave me a heavy, sharp stink eye when he drove by me, he even paused for 2 seconds to do so parking his car right beside my car.
2. a lot more smokers and drinkers than the other states I have been to and the community pool where we’re staying at have tons of drunk people partying.
3. lots of tattoo stores and many people with tattoos on their bodies.
4. I have seen piercings on faces, bodies and extra enlargement of piercings on ears.
5. woman dressing a bit too little, exposing large portion of their cleavage. (initially, I heard that most woman are all wrapped up to their neck to hide their body.)
6. so far no racist/discrimination yet for our family happening in Utah, we’re Asian. We feel fairly comfortable in this area.
Now, I’ve heard all rumors that all these actions (items 1. to 5. )are not very acceptable in Utah due to the religious atmosphere, but on the contrary, I have seen the most here than any other states. By the way, this in salt lake city, which is a more diverse city than the rest of Utah, but still, since roughly half of the population in SLC are Mormons, why are all these acceptable? Again, no offense and I’m not saying all these behaviors are wrong, just to my surprised that so many of these I have seen in the State of Utah. Any input?

Actually SLC is less than half mormon now and of that percentage there's an even smaller percentage of members who are active in the church. People are rude and obnoxious everywhere and I don't think SLC is any different. Just because SL is known for its religios nature doesn't make it infallible to all the crap in this world. Yes I think sometimes it is worse here because they are people that unfortunately are very hypocritical in the way they live their life. Putting on the good mormon facade on sunday and then acting like you mentioned the rest of the week. Go to Provo though and you might have a different experience...lol

You really need to look into Utah County. Very conservative, hardly ever see any bare knees, shoulders, or cleavage around here. Very peacful and happy place to raise your kids.

may I ask, how do you deal with this kind of society (not Utah, but everywhere..) and still be happy to live every day? sorry, kind of off topic here.

That is the point that *I* have been trying to stress for a long time now. No one said that Utah was a Utopia...just that it is a nice place to live. If you come looking for or expecting perfection, you are sure to be disappointed; WHEREVER your life takes you!

Well I don't really seem to encounter a lot of that negetive stuff you mentioned. I mean ofcourse it happens but you just need to choose to ignore it if that's what you want. I think its what you surround yourself with that will bring you happines and being true to yourself. And it's how you look at things; if you go looking for negative you're going to find it anywhere and the same thing with the positive.

I've got to ask where the heck you are to see what you discribed. It sounds more like a combination of a Vegas "Brazil Night" pool party and a Friday night on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood that anywhere in Utah. As far as your driving experiances, a "Baby on Board" bumper sticker is little redundant in this state with a birth rate that makes Mexico seem like a a pro-choice utopia. What highway or road are you talking about with the rude drivers? Were you on the 15 doing 55 mph in the fast lane? Were you making a point to who you perceived as people driving too fast on a two lane road that's hard to pass on? Can You be a little more specific?
