Oh, definitely not, but I doubt they would get this award if they weren't a good school, right?

NCLB progress only means they are making acceptable progress; maybe the school was terrible and they are making progress, maybe now only so-so. Not sure if this award is from NCLB or what. I would suggest you go to greatschools.net and look at not only test scores but parent reports as well. Look at all the stats they provide and then check out a few you like. Go to the UT reports and check those schools against the UT reports. Ask for a tour of the school. Being raised in the East may mean that an up-tight, too business oriented school might look normal to you. Can you take your husband with you if he was raised here? Also, I thought you wanted to live near his work on Foothills? Uintah Elem has excellent scores and that neighborhood is close to Foothills.
I think it does matter that your kid go to a neighborhoood school. As s/he grows up, finding after-school or weekend playmates becomes important. You don't want him to be the outsider or you having to drive him everywhere.

As for Oakridge, I don't know how people perceive it as I don't live in the area. But if it did get the Blue Ribbon Award then that must mean they are doing something right over there. So, yeah, it would be worth looking into

so you were in the granite district boundry and not the morningside boundry? and you got a letter offer to transfer to the morningside magnet school due to good grades at the other granite public elementary school? thanks.

I understand what you’re saying about being able to play with the neighborhood kids whom attend the same schools, but right now we’re renting and there’s no kids where we live anyways, down the road, we never know where we’ll end up at… Uintah elementary is a good one, I know, but then what about the jr. and high school afterwards? That’s’ why I was focusing on Wasatch Jr., Churchill or Olympus jr. high and their feeder elementary schools are Morningside, Oakridge and Howard R Driggs School where my son could have all the same friends, had to learn all this the hard way, since I don’t know anyone here, I mostly clicked on the property for sale and saw that the school combination was like this and also called the schools. I was born in Hawaii, went to school in Asia for 13 years, my husband was in the reverse situation, born in Asian, moved to Hawaii at the age of 10. In Hawaii, the public schools aren’t good at all, my husband still got good grades, turned out smarter than I am, people really admires his talent and attitude at work almost every where he goes...so to him, it really doesn’t matter which school our son goes to. I’m the one who’s dwelling on this school issue…ha ha..

Yes, you do want your child to stay in the same elementary school, the junior high that the elementary school feeds into, and the high school that the junior high feeds into. It is nice to have the same friends all the way through your public education.
Anyway, yes, I don't think it was just good grades (though it was a part of it). I remember taking some test to see if I was proficient. Yes, I can remember this clearly now. If you do well on the test (I did it in second grade), they will consider inviting you to attend Morningside.

Lmejh,
So would you say if you were at the Morningside elementary school already at that time and was invited to attend the magnet school at Morningside, you probably would choose to go, because all of your friends would all still be in the same school? I’m asking, because I was thinking about this when thinking about the selection between Oakridge and morningside…not that I assume my son would get invited due to good grades, but just in case...thanks.

Correct. I think they integrate the two (normal and magnet). It's just viewed as being on the "honor roll" I believe. However, I chose to stay at the school I was attending already instead of transferring because at that time I would rather stay with my peers (understandably so, I was in second grade). You may want to see what Morningside says on how they integrate the normal and magnet classes.
