NewToUtah,
Do you dislike living in the Salt Lake City area and South Jordan? From what I have read the quality of life in Salt Lake City is quite high. I know the schools in Utah might not be up to par with many other states, but from what I have read the Jordan School District is among the best in Utah. I am looking at both the Granite School District and the Jordan School District and I would like to know why you feel that the Jordan School District "is more than to be desired" and why you cannot wait to leave Utah.
I have overall only read positive reviews of both Granite and Jordan School Districts. The only high school I have read a few negative reviews would be Alta High School, and those were complaining about the materialism associated with being in an affluent area.

Because I came from a state that is a little less religious than here, Im used to doing things on Sundays, I'm used to places being open after 9 and Im used to going places that are ADULT oriented not a gazzillion kids running all over the place. Maybe I would like to go to a place and eat and not have to worry about little Johnny crawling over the booth next to me...it drives me nuts..and yes I have kids before u ask. If I could show you what my son brings home froms school compared to what he did last year u might understand a little better why Im upset over the school systems here. I also don't agree with year round school and I also don't agree with having 25 kids in a class..how is that right???? You can read all the reviews you want, but in the long run u will understand, possibly, words are just that words. Being materialistic is very big in this state as well. We are gone in about 7 months and honestly I can't wait. Utah was never a state I even wanted visit and now Im stuck living here for a bit. I tried to make the best out of it, but I am burnt out in this short time Ive been here. I dont like the drivers, the Stepfordness here, allllllllllllllllll the kids that seems like their parents can't control, the school system...should I go on?? And before anyone says anything...no I didn't enjoy Maryland that much either..I know where I want to be and I am getting there FINALLY.

Aside from the school issues, most of this applies to me as well in terms of what I'm used to (New Jersey). I have no use for religion at all. I can't stand kids, but I haven't seen any more of them here than where I came from. Maybe because I don't have a kid, so I'm not doing "kid" things. I go to adult oriented restaurants later in the evening and I barely see any kids. I'd only do something like the zoo when I know they are in school - you learn to avoid places & situations where kids are rampant. It's not that hard. Just NEVER visit Ikea on the weekend! lol
But I love it here - it's got almost everything I want. It's all personal preference. If you're a mountain person who like outdoor stuff, this is paradise. Don't be put off because it's not everyone's cup of tea. There are a handful of very vocal Utah haters on this board who are just in a place that's not a good fit for them. Everyone has to make their own choice.
Newtoutah, I'm glad for you that you are getting to leave & I hope you like your new place better. I know what's it like - I spent 20 years wanting to get out of the NYC area. No one should have to live where they're miserable.

Well back home u would have never seen a child at a steak house where the meal is 100 bucks for two people..u just wouldn't. I dont hate kids..i have them myself..but when there all over the place its ridiculous and to have so many is just a joke...who can afford to have that many in todays world???

I'm wondering (maybe this has been said before?) if you might have liked SLC better than S. Jordan? SLC seems quite different. Sugar House, The Avenues, that whole area seems to have a much more liberal/progressive feel to it, kids but not swarms of them, more diversity, etc. Seems like maybe it would have worked better for you? Did you ever look there and what did you think?

US Traveller, have you looked at the 'burbs' north of SLC? The commute to West Valley area is about 35-45 minutes, there are 2 highways (I15 and the new Legacy Highway). Similar to Draper and other areas you've mentioned, it is safe, crime free and has numerous areas to hike/bike/jog as well as brand new community center. For a more vast variety of dining (beyond the chain places) and theatre you'd head downtown, but it only takes about 15 mins or so. If interested, look into the East Benches of Bountiful, Farmington, Centerville and Fruit Heights. The school district is Davis School District.

I have and I was a little interested in Bountiful, but I did not know much about the schools. I liked the idea of having a house with a view of Great Salt Lake.
