Default If You Knew Then What You Know Now

I'm "borrowing" this title from another state, it had some great responses. What would you do differently if you were able to buy your house all over again? What do you regret doing, or not doing? What surprised you after you moved in? What worked out well?

I will start by saying I thought this would be my last home so I didn't pay attention to re-sale considerations. Then my DS got married late in life and began having children. Now, I miss my grandkids and want to move closer to them. The most consistent comment I got when trying to sell my house this summer was, beautiful house but I don't like the commercial behind it. I know these 87 y/o walls are a good insulation for sound as well as heat, but people are afraid of hearing the commercial stuff. If I had to do it all over again, I would not think this was my "last" house. Life moves on and things change so much....

I won't buy a home without a buyer's agent again (including new construction). Learned the hard way not to trust the promises made buy a builder.

Hopefully the housing market will recover soon. SugarHouse is such a wonderful area, when the housing market picks up again, I'm sure that it will sell quickly! It's probably not much comfort, since you are missing your grandkids right now. Who knows? Maybe I'll be moving back soon and can buy your house!

I would not have bought my older home in Chicago. It requires so much upkeep, and it is just a problem considering I only live there on weekends. It is a little hard to sell because it is near a stop light, but it does have pretty lake and park views, which is why I return on weekends.

sorry, off topic here. where do your grandkids live now? as I recall, they were at another state, will you move there if you get to sell your house? does your move depend on the sale of your house? my dad in Hawaii misses my son dearly, so I know what you're going through..

Yeah, unfortunately I have to sell before I can move. I've taken it off the market as I refuse to drive across UT, Colo, and the Great Plains in the winter! I'll try again next Spring. They're in New Orleans, which I will visit but never live there again but they are trying to move to the Charlotte, NC area, as I am.

I would have purchased a home in West Jordan, Herriman, or South Jordan. At the time, I assumed I would be working downtown. So the home I chose is about 20 minutes from downtown via the 201 freeway. Relative to Sugarhouse or the East Bench, I got a much bigger lot and a newer, larger home for the same price.

But I ended up working on the West Bench. Now my work is only 10 minutes away. But I could have lived in the aforementioned towns and gotten the same house with a better school district, and still have a 10 minute commute. Oh well, you never know, and I do like my house.

I think if I were to do it all again, I wouldn't move to Utah county. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods in SL county that I would probaley be happier in, and maybe have an easier time of feeling at home here.
We came here because of the Alpine school district, but my daughter would have done better and been happier in another high school, just as easily.
