Default neighborhoods to live near SLC & skiing for young couple

Hello!! My husband and I are thinking of relocating to the SLC area from NYC. We would like to live within a good distance from great mtns either the park city area or the powder mtn/ snowbasin area as well as living close to downtown for work and social aspects. We are in our early 30's with no kids but planning on having kids. Are there neighborhoods that have attracted the outdoors types as opposed to LDS or conservative neighborhoods. I have no problem with LDS but I would like to live around other young couples that like to drink and are open to different people and cultures. Any thoughts would be great, thanks!!!

Depending on your price range, Sugar House or the Avenues or Foothills areas will likely suit you best. All are convenient to the ski areas - the city actually runs buses up the canyons in the season-but driving in a 4-wheel vehicle is easy as well. The further out in the valley, which has numerous towns and unincorporated areas, the more conservative the area and the more LDS. As Seinfeld says, not that that's a bad thing, but if you want neighbors to come over to a BBQ and have a beer with you, stick to the areas I mentioned.

Agreed - you definitely want to be in Salt Lake, not the surrounding area - there is plenty of diversity here. In Sugarhouse or Foothill areas, where you can hop right on Rt. 80, you can be to Park City in 25 minutes.

I just moved here from the NYC area (North Jersey), and I can tell you that this area is a breath of fresh air, coming from there. For the two months I have been here I can count how many times it has rained on one hand, and it's usually pretty brief - no back to back days of gloomy weather (although I hear the winter is not quite as nice). The lack of humidity makes it very comfortable. The people are really nice, and overall, I think it's great here! Alcohol is plenty easy to get as well, and plenty of people drink - so you won't have a problem there.

Absolutely! I was just back there for a few days to visit. I noticed even on the nice days the sky just isn't as blue there, and then yesterday was disgusting all day with windy cold rain, ruining my plans to visit NYC for the day. It was nice to come back to UT!

Default depends

on how much your gonna ski and how close you want to be? If your only skiing resorts (no backcountry) maybe Park city would be a good place for you. Its a great town everything is close stores, mountains etc.... if you want a large city and alot of congestion I'd live in Sugarhouse and that will give you a small commute to any mountains for skiing. If you want SLC but close to mountains I'd live up in Sandy by the mouths of the canyons, then you'll have access to Little or Big cottonwood fast.
