thanks, I do like everywhere I have lived, and there are very, very friendly people in Oklahoma, just like Utah. My heart belongs to Utah though as I lived there 27 years. People are people wherever you go, you just have to try to get along and be positive. I didn't even mind that in my interview at work here they asked if I had found a church yet. Now that would bother most people, but in the bible belt people are very religious, so I was expecting something like that. I just told them Yep I found a church and that was that.

Yeah, Salt Lake is boring as none other for a city its size. No way can anyone refuse that, nightlife is dead here. I can agree with that... but goodness, this thread is going to hell in a handbasket. Everyone take a breather and relax.

Good grief........no kidding. How about a thread "happy to be in Denver now". If you are happy to be out....then ok already...bye bye. Life is too short to have so much negativity.

Well the hostile dissent here is really out of line for this thread. How about disgruntled SLC trolls stay off a forum that was titled "happy to be out of salt lake'"???

Use of the Ignore feature: click on "My settings", click on ignore, and add the user names of people you don't want to see any posts from. You can add/delete as you wish. If you have someone 'ignored", all you see is a box saying you don't see the post b/c they are on your ignore list. It's quite handy when you don't want to ruin your Sunday afternoon by reading something inflammatory.

How did this post turn from someone who was happy to be moving to someplace else (and if you don't like it here, please GO) to busting on Utah because of alleged discrimination?

I agree i think more diversity is always a good thing. I have nothing in common with Mormons but I am sure they could learn something from me and I could learn something from them.

I understand what some people WANT in life, or in a roommate, or a MATE, or in a tenant. But the reality of living in the USA is that you cannot discriminate against someone because they are NOT LIKE YOU in an employment setting, or a living situation.

You can have standards as a landlord but it really only applies to property rights and the possibility of damage being incurred.

To force someone into not drinking or having sex or sleepovers would be illegal if they were a tenant in a property.

Although not in a roomate situation because you are sharing the domain and are subjected to actually LIVING with the person.
Because the contractual laws you sign would apply to both of you living in the house together, you would both have to follow the HOUSE RULES.

The only reason you can say no smoking in a dwelling is because it inherently damages the property with smoke scent and possibly with burns which may never come out therefore permanently damaging the property.

The only reason you can say no pets is because they damage the property with cat scratches or perhaps dogs digging and peeing on carpets or in the yard ruining the grass. That would devalue your property.

You cannot legally say no drinking because no damage is inherently occured by drinking. You cannot regulate something that hasn't happened (i.e. the possibility of them being a violent drunk).

You can regulate noise levels.
If they have parties and are quiet you cannot regulate that. You cannot tell a tenant they cannot have guests over.
IF they have parties that were LOUD and violated your noise ordinance, because it bothers other tenants which then may move out and would devalue your property, then you can regulate because their behavior is affecting your property.

The only time you can discriminate is when it will affect the value of your property.

This is why the ACLU is so important. To defend the rights of ALL the little people. And since in Utah Mormons are the majority, everyone who is not is the minority. I would think they would step in IF IT COULD BE PROVEN which most likely would never happen.
