For Newcomers/Visitors: Lake Effect Snow
Go to either weather.com or weatherbug, enter the zip for SLC (one is 84105) and then click on the radar map. You will see a line of snow, heading southeast. That's lake effect snow, when the wind passes over the lake and picks up a lot of snow. The wind then becomes like a salad shooter, spreading that snow wherver it blows. So some areas get a LOT fo snow and some get hardly any at all.
Other cities near a lake have lake effect snows, like Cleveland and places in New York state.
