Thinking of moving to Sandy
Can anyone offer some inputs on living in the sandy 84092 area? I would appreciate honest answers. The house prices seemed high but the mountains looked beautiful. Will the prices go down there? Is it ok to buy there? We are from CA Bay area , non LDS and empty nesters. Do not have friends or relatives in this area. My Husbands office is in Draper and I do not have a job yet. Thanks.

I think Sandy overall is a nice town to live in. I prefer to live further north since my job is north of Sandy. There are LDS all over the Salt Lake valley. I would say Sandy is a mix of families, singles and empty nesters....but I would say mostly families live in Sandy. There is plenty of easily accessible shopping, restaurants and general entertainment. It's not too far from downtown or from the airport.

I am planning on moving to Salt Lake City in early 2009. I have done some research on the area. If your husband will be working in Draper and you love the mountains, you should also consider Draper. It has homes that are newer and it also has good schools, from what I have read.

Sandy 84092 info
We moved from the northeast due to job relocation about 13 years ago and have only lived in the 84092 area. My first suggestion would be to purchase a valley map and plan on marking things up. It was incredibly easy to learn my way around the valley with the grid system. First, map out your work locations, your preferred neighborhood, then research alternate routing. You will be thankful of knowing alternate routes when weather/accidents/construction come into play. We selected our 'area' based on this. Sandy has everything we need - a great library, post office, grocery stores, chain/warehouse stores, the mall, etc., but not too many little family establishments. Access to Little Cottonwood is huge for us, so we live north of the dry canyon and east of the library. We are huge skiers, hikers, campers, etc. We are non-LDS and have found our involvement in our church has increased. Sandy has great recreational facilities, Alta Canyon facility,(9400S 20th E) which has an outdoor pool, playing fields, etc. There is also the Dimple Dell Rec center (106thS 10th E) which has an indoor pool and facilities. Memberships are required, but very reasonable. There are also private gyms in the area. There is also the very active Senior Center (90th S and 13th E) and Sandy Amphitheatre. Don't be afraid to take time to comb through neighborhoods. There are some pockets of gems out there. We purchased our first home, then moved 1 mile away 2 years later. Yes, many of the homes in Draper are newer, but don't be fooled by the school argument. Depends on your priorities - We have our children on permit in public schools which meet their advanced academics. Yes, we have done the private school route. It was difficult at first to get used to the Utah culture and can still be very irritating. Shopping is great on Sunday here! From our location everything we need is literally little more than a mile or two away. Sandy and Draper have grown leaps and bounds since our arrival here and the area fulfills all our needs. One downside is that the area is transient, with many relocations/friends in and out. (However, many of my friends would move back to the area in a heartbeat.) The mountains are incredible, accessible and inviting. The four season weather is fantastic for my aging bones, compared to our former snow belt climate in the NE. I won't speak to the real estate market since it has been about 10 years since our last transaction; everyones perspective is different depending on where you are moving from. Simply, there is something for everyone here.

Sandy is a great area. We live in the 84092 area code near Wasatch Blvd, incredible views and easy commute everywhere. We have moved a ton in the last 15 years and I have to say that Utah is the most family friendly place we have lived. It will be hard to leave this state. My friends from the East think I'm crazy when I tell them how much we enjoy living here. We were never very outdoorsy but we now ski, hike, bike etc.. we just love all of the opportunities. I would not worry about the LDS thing at all. Our street is a mix and we are just as friendly with our LDS neighbors as our non. Their kids are very nice and play with our kids - actually my older son's favorite friend is LDS - to him there is no difference. I just have never felt that it is an issue. With that said, we send our children to Catholic school so really the only interaction we have with the LDS religion is through our neighbors (who are great people). I think it's a good balance.
I would first choose the school you want to send your children to and then find a house. We like the East side but South Jordan and Riverton have newer homes that you may like. We like being close to the mountains so we mainly looked on the East bench.
Good luck with your search!

Sandy is pretty decent. They pursue traffic violations there with a vengeance. I never had a problem, but i saw people stopped for speeding a LOT more than i did in Salt Lake. I dont know if Monroe street is part of sandy, but its.. um..a really, um... well.. i liken the neighborhood around monroe street to um.. poop on a stick.
