To those of you who want to move to Utah but have reservations about mormons please do some research. Perhaps living in the shadows of a religious group is fine with you but realize who's in charge in Utah...dah mormons. How could a person actuallty see you as an eqaul when they think they are a saint? what are you then as a non-LDs?
This is just my opnion and warning to those from Cali, NY, and FL or any other place that conforms with the status quo

This is just untrue. You've obviously never been to the bible belt areas? Or to the Northeast. There is a large Jewish population where I come from and many are much more clannish and discriminating then the Mormons. One difference - the Mormons would love to convert everyone and have them join. The Jews simply don't want you, and will discourage people from trying to convert. There is much more tension between these groups there than there is here between Mormons & non's.

Ever live around a bunch of Jehovah's Witnesses? They don't celebrate any holiday except Easter for Christ's death - no Christmas, no b'day, n Thanksgiving, etc. No drinking, no pre-marital sex. Can be oppressive in its own way. However, they would like you to convert. I grew up in the Bible belt and drinking, dancing, and smoking was frowned on (well, they got smoking right IMHO). Anywhere you live, there will be someone or some aspect that you find obnoxious. I just don't find much about UT that is obnoxious and I am a "non." If you don't like it, leave this rest of us alone to enjoy it.

Hey cinnabon, I am just repeating what the LDS and their literature claims. You have to think that a religious group that is in such power as they are in SLC see others not of their group as inferior. You dont think mormons hire mormons before non-mormons or give specal treatment to each other?
I lived in Arkansas and had no problem with southern baptists. I am sure their is cronyism in their group but with the LDS its so extreme. The mormons can be nice but they also tend to judge non-LDS members too much.

Southern Davis County?
[quote=kaytidid;6904259]Sorry for your experience Jennabugs! I have heard some people say that Davis County is a bit rough to fit into, although I haven't had too much experience with Davis County myself. What experience I have had though, that wouldn't surprise me.quote]
My first post. My employer is thinking about moving me to SLC, so I am in the research stage.
I have a wife and two small boys (3, 5). I will be working in downtown SLC. Davis County is mentioned as a more 'strict' LDS area.?? What about North Salt Lake? We are looking at the newer communities on the E bench. I have to admit...new cookie cutters with a nice back yard (and apparently a 20 minute commute) seems pretty nice.
As non-LDS, what is North Salt Lake like? I assume Bountiful is more conservative LDS.??
We have no problems with LDS..but like many, want to be in a neighboorhood where we aren't excluded due to their church activities. Is South Davis County a good mix...or have less conservative LDS?
I was raised in a very tolerate family in Maryland...so I feel funny asking the question. However, I have lived in Denver for many years and spend some time in SLC for biz. Was suprise of some us vs. them stuff. Just want to make sure the family has a good chance to put down roots and make good friends/neighboors.
Thanks.

Watch out where on the benches you buy - some of them have landslide history and current foundation cracking, etc. North Salt Lake has a very problematic neighborhood (I posed about it earlier today).
I think as long as you are noirth of Utah county, you will be fine. Daybreak is a new neighborhood and I know it's diverse. I personally like the loook of older areas, so Sugar House, Foothills, University, and Avenues are areas I think you should look at. Good luck!

I can see where there could be favoritism in hiring, but I don't agree that most Mormons see others as inferior. (If they see you as inferior, why are they so anxious to have you come on board?)
Favoring members of ones own group in hiring is far from being unique to Mormons. Again, with my Jewish example - for years I had a very Jewish last name (my ex husband was German). He was quite sure he was hired at one job only because initially they thought he was Jewish. This can also happen with various ethnic groups - people will favor their own.

Oh how I just love comments like this, because seeing the pot calling the kettle black makes me chuckle!
If you want to TRULY know about Lds feel to go the Ask a Mormon thread....all kinds of wacky things are being said there, on all intelligence levels.
As for us believing we are saints, yes we do BUT what you believe it to mean and what we believe it to mean is NOT the same thing especially asyou have chosen to eliminate the full context it is said...Latter Day Saints...now do you know what one is?. So when you are finished adivising people to research living amongst Lds, YOU need to go and research what you are actually spouting off in the first place. The reason a lot of us Lds will not participate in non member friendships is because we OFTEN (not all the time cos even Lds aren't perfect people) feel/experience that we are being judged before someone gets to know us as people then when we are asked a question it is basically rejected and we're called liars.
BUT
the fact is Lds have a lot to give by way of many areas in life, and SO do non lds, if only one shut up about THEIR beliefs long enough to allow others to be who they want to be!
Wanna spend some time reading my scriptures with me? Could do with a study buddy!!

"As for us believing we are saints, yes we do"
So what status then is there left for non saints? You honestly think they will get a fair shake in Utah?
I think this is an important question for people who plan on moving to Utah...

Because "us Utah people" haven't experienced what you have, simple as that. A lot of us have been living here a decade or more so I just suppose that things worked out somehow. Fate maybe? Who knows. In any case enjoy that clean air in Denver.
