So, we decided that we are decent people and will buy where we like and do our best to make friends. We have two little boys (3 and 5) and the oldest will be in Kindergarten at Draper Elementary this fall. Mentally, I guess we have some fall back as Juan Diego is about a mile from our house, so if our children are having a horrible experience, we can try private schools.
We are going into this with open minds and hope all works out. We will be there in early July.
Besides Draper's outdoor pool....is anyone aware of splash parks in the area?

I hope you love it in Draper. Best of luck to you and your family.

So if you saw me and I was drinking Coke, what would your conclusion be?

All WILL work out. You'll run into some problems and you'll also run into some very nice, welcoming people. Focus on them.

How far are you willing to drive? Or are you looking at someplace within walking distance of your house?

Katzpur, I know your reply wasn't directed towards me, but I just had to jump in here for a sec...
My conclusion would be that you like Coke, right??
Ha-I have learned long ago that many LDS DO drink soda, many non LDS do not drink alcohol nor smoke (dh and myself). It has nothing to do with religion, we just don't care to.

My erroneous conclusion would be that you were not LDS. I admit, I have a lot to learn. But, I will only learn the nuances once we are settled in. But I made my point - Based on the internet and speaking with people, the LDS v non-LDS is by far the biggest topic of conversation for people moving to the area (and we were paranoid about it). We are going to live where we like and go from there. Who knows...every Mormon on the block may drink Coke and religion may never be an issue (I hope!).
Nope....a few miles either way is fine. I saw a new splash park was open in Herriman, but don't have a good idea how long of a drive that is from Draper.

A mere hop, skip and jump away! Depending on where in Herriman it is (I hadn't heard of one in Herriman..where is it?) and where in Draper you are, probably around 10 minutes...give or take.

Your assumption is not as obviously erroneous as it has been made to seem. Of course there is nothing on the mormon books which says "don't drink coke" b/c it didn't exist back when all these things were being said. I have spoken with plenty of Mormons (some coke drinkers, some not) who feel that Mormons drinking coke is hypocritical (and this comes from LDS). That obviously the INTENT of the edict not to drink coffee or tea is to avoid caffeine, so anyone drinking coke is not explicitly breaking any mormon tenets however they are most likely breaking the INTENT of the no tea/coffee thing and they apparently know it (given that I've had this conversation w/a number of LDS).
We have LDS neighbors who insist coke and other caffeinated beverages are NOT OK.
So your assumption was reasonable imo.

When I first moved here, I met a young woman studying at BYU, at a seminar, and she refused to drink coke at lunch b/c someone might see her and report it. I guess the school has a very strict code of behavior. I have always heared from LDS co-workers that the intent is to avoid caffeine - and most doctors would agree that a lot of coffeine is not good for you!
So many early religious dietary prohibitions had their roots in health reasons - shellfish and porgk eithe spoiling easily w/o ice or being infected with trich.

How can something so "obvious" be inaccurate? I don't know, but it can. The LDS Church has never, ever, ever, said that the intent of the rule prohibiting "hot drinks" is to avoid caffeine, and that is the truth. Trust me. "Hot drinks" has always (essentially since the revelation was given back in 1838) been interpreted to mean "coffee and tea." Caffeine has never been specified as the "intent" of the law. True, coffee and tea both contain caffeine, but that's not much more than a coincidence in terms of the doctrine. Since the Word of Wisdom (as the health code is known) has been interpreted by the LDS Church leadership as prohibiting tea and coffee specifically, iced tea and coffee are also prohibited. Caffeinated soft drinks are not.
Now, that's the "letter of the law." The whole point of the Word of Wisdom is to provide a directive counseling us as to how best to take care of our bodies to remain healthy. As most people know, it also forbids alcohol and tobacco. What most non-Mormons don't realize is what it advises us to eat -- a diet high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and meat in moderation. Not such bad advise.
