What I "go with," Froggy, is the Church leadership's interpretation on the subject. Granted, it makes sense to assume that no tea and no coffee means no caffeine. Granted, caffeine probably isn't good for you. I'm just reinterating what the members of the Church have been told for the last 180 years.
I suppose that if, as a member of the Church, I were reading this for the first time and had never heard the teaching discussed, I might be persuaded that you've got a good point. Having heard it taught all my life, I know what it means and see no reason to try to re-interpret it to suit myself. (Besides, I hate tea and coffee. On the other hand, if I could occasionally have a glass of wine with my dinner without feeling guilty, I'd love it. If I were going to try to make the Word of Wisdom say what I'd like it to say, I'd start by trying to find a way about the prohibition against wine. )

I think the key here is going with the way it has been interpreted for 180 years. It may be correct, OR maybe it was MISinterpreted back then and everyone still sticks with the "I'll go with how it was interpreted" you know? Like you "know" what it means b/c you were told that's what it means. But what if it were not the original intention? What if what everyone "knows" is actually all based on a misunderstanding of the passage. But I understand that you have to follow the leadership of your church. That makes sense to me. As someone not in the church though, i wonder if this was the original intention of the words.
I don't know why "again" should be interpreted as anything other than again. Why would "again" mean "likewise"? Those are 2 totally different meaning words. Kind of like how "hot drink" and coffee are 2 totally different words! and I don't know that "strong drink" means hard liquor. How do we know? And if it is accepted that "strong drink" means hard liquor, then why should "hot drink" not mean what was the accepted meaning of that term at the time? The whole section seems to be about alcohol!
I really do understand that you need to follow what your church teaches so I'm not knocking you for following it. But wouldn't it be just a little bit funny (and not out of the question) to realize, after all these years, that the whole "hot drink" thing has absolutely nothing to do with coffee/tea?? I think I need to put a call in to the Quorom (sp?) 12
BTW, I want to say thanks for being nice about this conversation. I realize it's not fun when someone is pulling at beliefs you have and questioning them. I don't mean any harm, but I do question some of it, and I appreciate your non-defensive responses!

Hmmm. Well my Webster's Unabridged gives the following definitions:
Again (definition 3): moreover; further; in addition; as, again, let me add; again it is further to be considered.
Likewise (definition 2): also; moreover; too.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time.

Well you haven't been rude, so why should I be? Try being rude to me and see how nice I am.

I must admit, I did not know "again" included definitions of "moreover/further/likewise"!

Hey Everybody- I haven't been on in a while. It's taking alot to get settled in. Could we please try to keep these next posts to the original topic at hand and by doing so, helping those who need it. Don't get me wrong, this has all been very interesting. I am especially trying to learn as much as I can about the LDS church, now that I am here. I just don't want someone to look through these posts and have questions, but not want to ask because we got so far off topic. But I do have to say, it is nice that my neighbors are so health minded, and friendly, because I have been scoring some major fresh garden veggies! Heck Ya!!! I love it! In return I baked them some cookies from scratch. Being a good neighbor will in return get you good neighbors back! And a reminder to everyone reading these posts, I am non-LDS. So, this should be some proof that is has nothing to do with religion,in most cases, but more as to really just trying to get to know those around you.
I love where I am living!

According to the white pages info section, there are over 80 different religious types of churches/temples/whatever in Salt Lake City. That seems pretty diverse to me!

I agree. There may be more of some then others, but it's nice to know as an outsider that if they come here they will not be "alone". And if they aren't hooked up in anything, and want to be, there's options!
I hope you are well, Southernbell.

Thank you, Rachee3. I think the most diverse-sounding is a church in SLC named "K2The Church." I don't know anything about it other than a vague rememberance of a newspaper article about a casual style service. I pass it on 2100 South and the TRAX line.

True enough. However, what this leaves out is that many of those churches/temples/synagogues have less attendance on Sunday/Saturday than one LDS ward in South Jordan has. The diversity is there the numbers may not be.
