I do not know Layton first hand, however my understanding is that it is heavily LDS. I would not live there. But then, I would not live in any suburb in the SLC area (except perhaps Olympus Cove) b/c there is far less religious diversity there, and it is much more conservative (which may be a plus or minus for you...it's a minus for me).
SLC proper though has areas which feel suburban but are very convenient and which are much more diverse than outside the city. I'd say upper avenues and EAst of Foothill feel very suburban. Harvard-Yale feels quite suburban, Lower Avenues and Sugar House feel more urban (though SH a bit less-so). Emigration Canyon feels rural.
If he's not commuting in winter, Park City might make sense to look at as well, but I'd start in SLC and see if it works for you and expand outward from there as that's where he'd be working...

Layton is (comparatively) not so LDS. Hill AF base is there, and there are alot of people from other parts of the country. It is also located well, half-way between SLC and Ogden, close to highway and trax.
However, if your considering places like PC, the Aves, ect, Layton is...not as high-scale.

SLC area
Hi i'm a Utah native (ya-hew) I have lived in Salt Lake east and west sides, and have lived in cities to the north. Layton, in my opinion, is the most progressive and diverse city north of SLC, east side is best, stay away from it's southern neighbor (Kaysville) if you want religous diversity it is like an extension of Utah county.
I am a lifelong mormon (here i'm referred to as a "jack mormon" non-active, liberal, like my adult beverages. Oh, you may want to learn some local phrases like "oh my heck" or "that flippin (fill in the blanks)

I have also heard that Ogden is not very pretty to look at. Is Layton very pretty? We will not be looking at Park City, it's to expensive.
