But I have read on other posts that some places are just better then others for people in our situation. Is it true that North of SLC is better then South? And I have also heard good things about Layton and Syracuse, would they fit our needs? Could anybody recommend someplace better? Thank you, in advance, for any help!

I have heard the avenues, sugarhouse, Sandy, Cottonwood heights and anything on the east side of downtown is best for non mormon action.

I work in different houses all around town from herriman up past down town and havent really found much of a pattern as to what areas have more lds. It really seems hit and miss. In my opinion, to say that a paticular city is more lds then another really isnt an accurate way to find a house.
besides that, its not like mormons are weird devil worshipers. some of them can be pretty gay but that is just people in general. the majority, from what I see are at least nice to your face haha.

I just read through the entire post...and I cannot BELIEVE you spelled Mormon incorrectly..LOL
seriously though...I lived in Layton for 3 years (moved to NY about a year ago) and would highly recommend it if you want to live north of SLC. The commute can be a bear...esp if you are driving to downtown SLC. Mass transit has gotten better with light rail and the legacy freeway however.
Layton in itself has everything you need...it is scenic and is about as diverse as it gets. We have two little girls from different parts of the world (Haiti and china) and we weren't the only multi-racial folks in the neighborhood believe it or not!! The AFB adds a good deal of diversity to the area and keeps the economy a bit more stable.
It is definitely a bedroom community...but is positioned nicely far enough north of SLC to be on its own.
now...that being said...if we were to move back to SLC we would look in Sugarhouse. It is more progressive and a really pretty area.
PM me if you want any other info. there are a lot more things to consider when moving to Utah than the mormons.

You might want to consider Magna for the outskirts of town/country feel ... there are some decent homes with pretty big yards , and the commute down 201 into salt lake is fairly painless compared to the I-15 commutes. As for crime , it is fairly average over the whole valley there , with it being more seedy in the glendale area ... wich is just south of Rose park. Rose park is actually a pretty nice community , compared to some.
Oh ,one bad thing about magna is the water though ... but with a filter system it tastes just as good as anywhere else.

I know there are people who are very happy in Magna, but you could not get me to live there if my life depended upon it.

I would imagine it means that it's social activities which do not include going to church (or anything church-associated) and may include such things as having a beer or a glass of wine...

Activities on Sundays and Monday nights, when most LDS are engaged in church or church-supported activities, as well as what frogandtoad mentioned. Language tends to be a bit looser, less of the fetch/fudge and goodness to me and more of what that stands for. A BBQ on a pleasant Sunday late afternoon with beer or beer-marinated chicken comes to mind.
