Default From Texas to Utah...

Hi! My husband are considering moving our family of 5 (including us) from Houston, Texas to the SLC area. There are some many reasons as to why, and we are pretty set on making the move; we just want to gather some information on the different areas, etc.

We currently live in a small town, very country part of Texas, and like the hometown feel it has. We want to find a somewhat similar area near SLC if it exists that is family friendly, not extremely expensive, and with the best schools the Utah school system (yes, I have heard) can offer. We are not LDS, so I'm sure that plays a factor too...

If anyone can help point me in the right direction - I would appreciate it!!

Thank you!

Well, depends on where you look. People say Utah County (which isn't really Salt Lake City or its suburbs anymore, but rather Provo) isn't the best place for non-LDS to live. However, the Salt Lake metro is a good place for anyone to live. I'm not LDS and have lived here for quite a while. The public school system worked out great for me, and my friends were not based on religion. I don't think you'll have many problems based on what religion you are.

I am not LDS and have lived here for quite a while without any issues. I have two daughters that are 12 and 8 and they never had any problems either. We live in Tooele County which has a bit more of a small town country feel. We have a decent public school, a private Catholic school that is supposed to go to 6th grade in the near future and a charter school for K-8 opening up this coming fall.

I'd stay away from Utah Co for the religion aspect. Near the Hill Air Force Base is pretty diverse, as is Tooele. Even in Salt Lake City itself, it isn't like Dallas or Houston. It's really a big area with no huge concentraitons except for downtown, not like what you see in most other large cities. It's the region that has a large population, not SLC itself.

I would look into Davis County. It is relatively close to Salt Lake. There is a commuter train that goes into the city. Kaysville and West Layton sound like what you are looking for. Home prices have dropped so you can get an almost new house for a steal! The schools are fabulous. I used to work for the school district and wouldn't have my kids go to school anywhere else. Both thoses cities are really friendly regardless of religion. The more north you go in the county the cheaper the houses are going to be. I would say just from personal experience, stay away from Woods Cross, Clearfield, Sunset, and West Bountiful. You can go to utahrealestate.com and check out some of the houses there. You will love it here! I have a friend that moved here from Texas and she thought she was going to hate it becacuse of all the Mormons and stuff, but she ended up loving it and never wants to move.

The best places to live in slc area is probably the avenues good for non-LDS low crime rates and decent houses.

Yes, if you can afford it, I would think the Avenues or Federal Heights would be very nice for you. However, they are both neighborhoods right in the city and are not small-town at all. But Salt Lake is like a big city with a small town feel, so you might not mind that. Sugar House would be another area to consider, too. It is more "neighborhoody" than in the city.

If you are set on small country town that's not at all in the city, look north of SLC rather than south.

I would recommend Draper, Sandy, and South Jordan in Salt Lake County as potential neighborhoods. North of Salt Lake County, you might consider Farmington, Layton, Kaysville, or even Syracuse.

I'd look forward to this move. I think you'll do fine.
