Default Best Area to live with a family while attending University of Utah?

We are a young family with 2 children headed to grad school at the University of Utah. We're coming from California and just want a nice, safe and somewhat inexpensive area to live in. We'd prefer to rent a house but are totally open to an apartment as well. Any suggestions?

Sugar House. Not too far, older houses but good-ish schools.

The lower avenues would be worth taking a look at too. Its closer to the U. However, once you get a little higher up the rents increase dramatically.
