Hello, I did not read all nine pages, so please forgive me if I am repeating what has been said.

First, I FEEL you. Try being 33 years old, and living in Davis county and not being LDS, oh and we don't have children yet (by choice). It's bizzare.

My husband is in the Air Force and we have lived here about 16 months. It gets easier, but not much. It's very, very, difficult being an outsider her. We went up to Boise recently and just loved the city - wish we could get out of here but can't yet.

Send me a private message if you ever want to meet up! It's a beautiful place to live, but the weird alcohol laws and church influence don't make it too fun to live here.

Isn't Boise really LDS too? I've never been there, but that's what I've heard.

This is just out of curiosity. I am not trying to start a flame war or be a troll. I am just very curious.

What would it be like for a Catholic, African-American male in his early 20's, single(no girlfriend or significant other),living in the SLC area?

I hear ya jennabugs. My wife and I (married 28 years) now 55 didn't go the kid route either, and believe me it's like we were Martians or something. In Utah it's "all about the kids" so it seems. It was very refreshing when recently we took a trip to Washington State and a Ferry across through the San Juan's to BC and spent the night. Very few brats running around as school wasn't out yet and we chose that time to travel. it worked out great staying in Bed and Breakfast lodging (childfree). All in all it gave us a chance to recharge our batteries. Indeed the influences here in Utah are very undersold (mostly by those that subscribe to them). But if you're ok in your own skin as they say you can make a go of it. You have to be very independant however.

I have lived in Utah for 15 years now, so I guess I can refer to here as being where I am "from" now, if anyone asks. Utah is the longest I have ever lived anywhere. It does take some getting used to. Don't think that I just moved in and it felt perfect right off the bat. It was a good couple of years before I didn't miss home anymore. A couple more before I started to feel like I could be happy. Probably six years before I started to feel content. Relocating and settling in takes time. Some places may take more time than others. Have patience. You have to approach Utah living like a strange dog. Slowly, but confident. If you do it right, you will have a new friend quickly. If you overwhelm, you could get bit.

Welcome to Utah! Most of us living here don't bite....
You do have to mostly refer to anything north of NYC as upstate because otherwise people think you live there.

We live in Nampa, which is about a half an hour drive from the city. About half of our neighbors are LDS. It is kind of like UT north but with more Mexicans. Which isn't a bad thing for me because I really like the food. Boise has the college and many tree huggers, it is a cool little city and I would love to move there. Meridian, which is the halfway point between here and Boise, is very heavily LDS.

Moving from the frying pan to the fire in a few months. God (or in my case, the flying spaghetti monster) help me!

When I move there we'll start a group or have meet-ups with other transplants to discuss life here and reminisce about the places we left ;]
