You can say this about anywhere - poulations grow, and the influx has done a lot of good in bringing in more diversity. Generally speaking, the people transplanting here are not the ones commiting crimes and joining gangs (think illegals).
And seriously, native Utahns have absolutely no clue what a "traffic nightmare" is. Check out the Cross Bronx expressway, which is almost constantly a parking lot, as well as many highways in busy metro areas.
It may be getting busier, but this area is a long, long way from being over-populated.

Sorry, still learning how to write on the whole message board thing and I started this writing under one name and then forgot my password and ended on another. I never spent so much time on the computer until I moved here. I guess it's just a little different here and I lived in NY state all my life. Different parts of it but never left until I came here, just having a hard time and I was addressing someone earlier that read a previous post that brought up something about alcohol and tobacco in connection to what I posted, maybe I took it wrong but I thought it implied that that's all I seemed to care about and if it is then I'm not in the right place. Yes I do drink, do I drink all the time and need it to have a good time no. But I actually have never been anywhere where alcohol seems to be such a BIG deal! It seems like it is a huge issue here. Either by people like me that feel like that want to drink socially with their friends on occassion or on the other side of the spectrum where people don't want it around them. Anyway besides that Utah is beautiful with a lot of wonderful things to do. I'm here because of my boyfriend's job transfer. I had a lot of friends and family at home so I never felt really so dependent on him for social interaction and I know I'm driving him nuts! Anyway trying to get out there. I find myself talking to stranger quite often when I go to the store and stuff and striking up small talk but that's all it really is but sometimes just making small talk at the grocery store is the best part of my day. LOL it almost sounds pathetic and now I'm writing way too much so, thank you for the welcome to Utah stycotl!

Many of the people who have lived in Utah their whole lives already have a complete social network (Mormon and non mormon alike). They don't need or have time for new friends. So don't think it's you. Ultimately it's hard to break into a culture filled with lifelong residents, so matter what place it is. If you can find a place with lots of transplants, you'll have better success since they'll be looking for friends too.

I am from upstate NY, lived there all my life before moving here. Moved around a little but pretty much a lifelong resident of one town. Yes we were a close knit community. I knew everyone in town, I couldn't go to the corner store without seeing someone I knew. But the big difference was when someone new moved in we tried to welcome them, regardless of their color or religion or anything else. I was a bartender if someone new came in, I would say hi, how's it going, where are you from try to make them feel welcome if they were new. Lots of people think us New Yorkers are unfriendly because lots of people can only think of the hustle and bustle of New York City, but we are not. There are also lots of other states I've visited that have been way more friendly. Anyway, I don't mean to make this sound like a generalization because not everyone here is unfriendly. Just having a hard time with the adjustment that's all. But believe me if one of you moved into my small town you would be welcome with a lot more kindness that me and a few other people I have seen on here have!

You said you lived in Lehi? General consensus is Lehi isn't the best place for out-of-state transplants to move, especially non-LDS. Try anything in Salt Lake County and you'd probably have a better time being welcomed.
