Perhaps you could share what types of cuisines you enjoy. I'm not that adventurous. The only cuisine that's really out of the ordinary that I enjoy is Korean.

As far as those condos are concerned, I remember at 39th & 9th there is an Iceberg drive inn. They have REALLY good shakes. My work is about 12 blocks from there. They look like they'd be really nice. I would recommend you move here, rent for 6 months, then decide where in the valley you'd like to live.

Just wanted to say "Thank You" to TimTimTim and the others who live/have lived in SLC or surrounding areas. My wife and I are desperately looking for a place to relocate to from the Austin, TX area. We are tired of the miserable weather here, and the southern mentality (although I was born and raised in Texas), and are looking for an alternative. We are not night-life, club-hopping, social butterflies moving from one party to another; our idea of "fun" is relaxing in the outdoors with a good book (okay, maybe my laptop or iPod along, too) and fresh air; having coffee on a mountain overlook would be near paradise to us.

The LDS information makes me feel better, although the few that I have been privileged to meet/know have always been very warm and accepting, even if I was not interested in their religion. As far as Utah having religion as "the very core of its culture", I can think of a lot worse things to have as your core.

All that said, I just want to express my thanks for the open and honest opinions that have been shared in this thread. We are all diverse, we all have opinions, and there are pros and cons about every possible living area on God's green earth, and SLC and Utah will be no different. But it sure sounds a lot better than the 9-month summers that we have to endure here in Texas, and quite frankly, I never HAVE been one for that "good ol' boy" southern appeal that so many seem to expect from a Texan. I guess I've got too much of my mom's Yankee in me.

If you like the idea of four distinct seasons (although too long a winter for my taste), lots of outdoor activities, being very, very close to the mountains, four or five hours from the most gorgeous red-rock county on the face of the earth, and are not overly concerned about the lack of nightlife (and it's not entirely missing, just considerably less than you're probably used to), Salt Lake City might be the perfect place for you.

Honestly the only people I have met that dont like it here are the bitter/retarded older people. Just people who want to complain about every possible thing you could imagine.

The millcreek area is a great area. I live right around there now and its great. It has a mix of old and new, big and small houses but the area is generally really safe.

I am going to miss this place alot when we go back to FL. I wish we didnt have to but unforuntatly we do, im sure that well be back sometime in the future and this will for sure be our vacation spot now.

The only thing that annoys me about here is how retarded some people are, espessially when it comes to drive. Just one quick point about that, since when is the person merging onto the highway the one with the rightaway????

You are right in insisting that he does NOT have the right of way ...

Do Not Insist on the Right-of-Way - (I assume that goes both ways)

Don’t let getting onto the freeway be a battle to the death.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
If you are on the freeway and can safely allow a car on the entrance ramp to enter traffic in front of you, do it.
Common courtesy is not a painful experience.

If you are entering a freeway, you should:
• Look for an opening while you are on the
entrance ramp.
• Speed up to freeway speed while you are in
the acceleration lane. (How many know how to do that ????)
• Merge into the right-hand lane without
disrupting the flow of traffic on the freeway.
Do not force yourself into traffic. (Typical human behaviour here ... me first - me first ...)
You must wait until it is safe to enter the traffic flow on the freeway.

Sadly enough, not many realise that the first part of the Driver philosophy
(that is all it is !!! Traffic laws are only a philosophy, else one would follow the rules by the letter)
is mentioned as *common courtesy*, and is mentioned FIRST.

I assume the second part is not read or understood by *the other driver* ....
Especially that last sentence .....

As always, my adopted terminology for being able to cope with Utah ....

So far that has worked for me pretty well. No accidents or traffic infractions for the last 17 years ......

I do remember the Lady who gave me my first Drivers License
(a very long time ago) saying, while smiling at me so sweet,
*When in doubt, yield*.
I have never forgotten that.

LBNL, are you, yourself, ALWAYS in compliance with the traffic laws ?
I am sure not, but I do try to be careful and often my neck hurts
from looking out for policemen in my rearview mirror .....
For some odd reason .... my car .... likes to drive faster than the posted limit ....

that was a funny post. not to mention true–unfortunately.

there is an opposite extreme to the aggresive merging driver. that would be the long line of cars in the path of the merger that don't care enough to let him or her in. so the merger either has to stop at the mouth of the merging lane, drive onto the shoulder of the road, or aggressively cut in between cars.

some people have this weird idea that they are the only ones on the road that need to get somewhere. this idea is compounded by another weird idea that if they can pass one car, or keep a car from passing them or merging in front of them, that their journey will end smoother and quicker.

i'd say that it is more likely that driving selfishly and obliviously like that will get you in more accidents. but that is certainly just my opinion...

either way, it does come down generally to selfish people on both sides of the equation, again, in my opinion.

Another take on this is when there are 2 lanes to merge into the highway. We have some of them in the south end of the valley, getting onto I-15. I read a very interesting article in the online NYTimes, written by a traffic engineer, who wrote that the fastest flow of traffic is to have both lanes merge together than merge onto the freeway. But how many times have you seen the line build up in the lane closest to the freeway and drivers not letting anyone from the second lane into line? People don't show common curtesy anywhere in this country, not just Utah.

I did the math on this *phenomenon*.
The *time savings* here are so negligible, it is absolutely not worth it.
On the surface roads, I usually make a game out of this.
I sit next to a car at a traffic light, I look at him/her, and try to make eye contact. If successful, I smile and nod.
Then we take off, and I just mosey (normal take off) on down to the next light. When I get there, just an iota of a second later than the person with the rabbit start, I try to make eye contact again, and then smile and nod again.
A few times, I have even been given *the finger* ..... Oh well ....

What I do miss in *surface road* traffic :
*The Green Wave* (Aptly named so, in several countries)
I have driven in some areas where they actually post the speed limits where you can *catch* the green lights all the way down.

I can *catch a green wave* going south on Bangerter, but have never been able to do so going north ....

I dont expect them to move around me but it should be a mutual thing. when they dont even look over and just assume that nothing is there is when i get really pissed
