My mom (who lives about 15 minutes from me, but sits about 1000 feet higher) regularly gets more snow in the winter than I do!

Oh, I know! I'm at about 25th East and 74th South. My mom used to live on 23rd East and 68th South and I could always count on getting more snow than she did. I'm just enough higher altitude to make a difference.

I guess it's a fair question because in, say, Oregon it rarely snows in Portland but you can go skiing only an hour away in the Cascades. Probably the same in parts of California.

National Weather Service - NWS Salt Lake City is all you need

Check out the climate page. Salt Lake City airport averages 55 inches a year...but that number varies GREATLY from year to year...and across the valley in any given year. Also...the past 3 years have been below normal in town.
