Moving from Iowa
Would like to hear opinions on what the transition from Iowa to SLC area is like. I've lived and worked in Omaha and Des Moines for my career, am married and 37, no kids with some yellow labs and a couple of cats.
I like the low cost of living, quality of life, drive times, etc here, however I love the mountains and fly fishing, etc. My wife is originally from toronto, so while she appreciates the finer points of Des Moines, she's not attached at all and would like to be in an outdoor friendly place as well.
I have read the threads on non-lds extensively, and since I've never been there I'd have to visit of course (fly fishing spot recommendations accepted!). How's IT doing there? Obviously the economy is hitting everyone to some degree, less here than other places.

Where in the valley is your job located? That might help determine where you might look for housing. Stay within the eastern part of SL valley and you'll be closer to the mountains for recreational activities. There are some areas where people can take their dogs, but I can't remember which canyons allow dogs. I too am a dog lover but I don't take my dog up into the mountains.

simply1, My family and I moved to the Omaha area about 6 months ago from Salt Lake City. We lived in Ogden and Lehi for a while. SLC is very expensive compared to Omaha/Iowa. Feel free to pm me for specific questions.

How are you finding Omaha compared to Ogden/Lehi, and why the move? Cost of living does look to be a bit higher, is it significantly higher or like 5-10% roughly.

I figure 50% LDS would be similar to Omaha's Husker religion, hah.

That 50% is only in Salt Lake City itself - not Bountiful, not Ogden, not South Jordan, not Draper, etc. Those areas are much higher in % of LDS. Just to correct a misimpression, not to criticize.

No kidding about the Husker religion. I'd say a little bit higher in housing than 5-10%. We moved to Nebraska for school. Utah is what you make of it. I'm non LDS and will say we wouldn't of remained in Utah. We actually really liked Ogden. Lehi was a different story...
I've read the posts on this state many times. And I read the on going battle of the LDS religion. Will it ever come up in your life? It really depends. In Ogden I never had any issues. Work was great, housing was great, etc. Lehi we did run into problems.
