Possible Relocation
I am possibly relocating from the east coast to SLC for my job. Presently I have a pretty long commute so I can handle the hours on the road, alternatively I hate the snow! So how far outside the city would it be for someone like myself have to live to not have the worst commute in the world? I am coming out there with my wife who will not be working because we recently had a baby. Are there any good places to buy a single family home under 300K that would be in reasonable driving distance to SLC throughout the year and have signs of civilization? Thank you for all or any help

Well, if you don't like snow, this is the wrong place for you. We don't get the tons of it that, say buffalo, does, but it snows. Do you want older or newer house? I would suggest renting for a while to see how you like various areas of the city.
What does signs of civilization mean to you? Sounds kinda insulting in a way. We don't all wear mocassins and buckskin caps!

I don't mind the snow, just not long commutes in it. I guess we would have to upgrade to a 4wd SUV. went I meant civilization, that my wife would be able to interact with people, shop etc relatively easy if I was to be far away from SLC. It wasn't meant as an insult by any means

It depends on the size of home you want, of course, but there are many homes available IN the city for under $300k. I looked at a 4 bed 2 bath home in the Liberty Park neighborhood for $280k just last week. Go to UtahRealEstate.com and do a search in the SLC ZIP codes. For a young family, I'd stay in the 84101, 84102, 84103, 84105, 84108, 84109, 84111.
Tell us in what type of area you'd like to live and we can recommend some specific neighborhoods in the city, or specific suburbs if you still want to be further out.

I think it really depends on what you want. The best real estate at the price you are describing is probably not close to downtown. Of course, if you want something smaller that price might be manageable. Commutes in the snow aren't terrible here. UDOT does a pretty good job plowing the major highways and roads. I wouldn't worry about no signs of civilization. The whole Salt Lake Valley is developed and there are businesses almost everywhere.

YOu don't really need a 4WD, I prefer AWD so you don't have to think about it. Use the 'search this forum" tool to see what has been written about this before, as there have been several threads on this.

The snow isn't that terrible. There was only one or two times last year that my commute was dramatically affected because of it.
How much is too much commute? If you're coming from the east coast, you're probably used to an hour commute--I could be wrong--but, that's almost entirely unheard of here in the valley. I work close to the SLC Airport (about 7 minutes from downtown) and I live in Murray. My commute is at most 25 minutes.

Well presently I have a 40 mins -60 minute commute (29 miles), but I definitely do not want that anymore so I would like that cut to at least half on a good day. I would like to live in a single family home with at least 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and newer construction. I guess its hard to describe, but I would like it so my wife can meet some good friends and still be able to shop and stuff too.

Daybreak sounds like it might work for you. Where is the job location? Daybreak is a newish planned community at the south end of the valley, with several pricepoints and nearby shopping.

Anywhere in the SLC Metro (Salt Lake Valley) should be under an hour commute. Some closer and nice areas would be SLC itself, Sandy, Cottonwood Heights, Holliday, Murray, South Jordan (where Daybreak is), Bountiful (which is right outside the SLC Valley, but only about a 20 minute commute).
