Do you intend to rent or buy? How much can you afford to spend for either? I can make recommendations, but where you live will depend on what you can afford.

rent up to 1200 ideally, and purchase up to 200,000. we would probably like to rent first until we feel we really like the area for sure, then buy.

Check out Daybreak in South Jordan. They have a lot of things to do, very energy efficient homes and they are soon to have a Trax Station in the middle of the community.

You can rent a house for $1300 or so but you get so many extras in the community.

Daybreak Utah — Official Site

Check out KSL.com for rentals and resale houses.

Where are you moving from?! Crime in SLC is practically nonexistent compared to most larger cities, especially in the upscale neighborhoods. And all of Salt Lake is EXTREMELY family friendly.

Unless you are moving from Mayberry, all of SLC on the east sdie is fine. Outside of the city itself, there are many, many areas that fit crime and family requirements, but not price.

I think the suggestion about Daybreak is a good one. Housing prices have come down, but I think 200K is still a bit on the lowside for many of the neighborhoods I'd recommend. On the other hand, 250K would get you into a lot of places in this housing market. South Jordan is probably a good place for you to start looking. Its not close to downtown though.

I live 10 blocks from downtown, and I can honestly say the crime isn't that bad. I've lived here 4 years and have never had any trouble. If the crime really scares you, I would say live just North of Salt Lake like Bountiful, Farmington, Centerville or Kaysville. There are so many Mormons there that the crime rate is almost nonexistent. Utah has some of the best transportation around. If you're working downtown, you can probably get to work from anywhere in the valley within 30 minutes. Salt lake probably has the most community centers and things for kids. Home prices in the valley are really low right now as well. Home prices are higher in the cities north of Salt Lake. If you live in Farmington, you can go to the local amusment park for free. If you like the outdoors, you will never run out of fun things to do if you live in Utah.

We have Front Runner (trains) which runs in from Davis County. Transfer to Trax (light rail) and you pretty much have all of downtown at a walking distance.

(I SRSLY cannot WAIT for Trax to get to the airport. How NICE will it be to put my husband on Frontrunner less than a mile from my house for him to go on his many business trips! No more airport shuttle driving trips for me!)
