West Valley City is predominantly illegal Mexicans with a very serious gang problem. Schools are filled with illegal children who tend to hold other students back. Law Enforcement is poor at its best. I suggest that you not look in West Valley, Salt Lake City, South and North Salt lay City, Magna, Taylorsville or Rose Park (a part of Salt Lake City). The East Side( Sandy, Draper, part of Midvale and Murry) is preferred.

WVC claims to have standards but it's selectively enforced. Don't depend of WVCPD for protection, fortunately CCW's are easy to get in Utah. If in WVC don't leave home without your American Express and concealed .45 auto.

Wow! Harsh! Sure WVC is not the pristine Utah town but it's not East LA, yet. There are pockets of nice neighborhoods every now and then. You just have to avoid Granger High School and it's feeder schools . Hunter High is a decent school, not great but decent.

OK, so that previous comment was a "bit" harsh....but....with that said I have to admit, there is ONE word that describes WVC to me....."DEPRESSING". I get soooo tired of hearing about this shooting, and that rape, some robbery and that fatal car wreck at some intersection in WVC on the TV virtually nightly. I just avoid that part of town like kids with the H1N1 flu. I suggest you do the same. You won't regret it.

This is not meant as a personal attack, but the empirical data does not support anything mrwdmcg has said. Not one thing.
The 2005-7 U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) data ( American FactFinder) reports that 80% of WVC residents were born in the U.S. Of the remaining 20% (residents who are foreign-born), 29.2% are citizens. That means that 14.2% of WVC residents are non citizens. Note that this does not mean they are illegal---they may be on work visa, in process of obtaining citizenship, etc., but the data does not get that specific.
Even if 14% of the residents are illegal, I don't know in what world 14% is "predominantly." Furthermore, of that 14%, nearly half are Asian, Polynesian, or Pacific Islander; it is not a case of "predominantly illegal Mexicans" AT ALL.
Ignore mrwdmcg's ignorant proclamations and look at the stats for yourself.
For the record, I still own a home in WVC but recently moved downtown because I found WVC too family-oriented for my tastes. My neighborhood was filled with children (mostly Caucasian, btw); in 5 years we didn't have a single criminal incident on my block; the neighbors were very nice; and I had a large home with a huge yard for a very low price. I wanted more nightlife and young singles nearby, so I moved. But if I had a family I'd live in my former area of WVC in an instant.

I think these kinds of posts require us to walk a fine line. Sometimes, because of personal feelings its hard to do. But imagine the stigma that some of these posts create for the law-abiding and decent residents of WVC. I don't ask for censorship. Nor, am I necessarily saying that anyone is wrong. What I am saying is beware that the people who live in these communities may deserve better than what is being said and that stereotyping and prejudice could hurt innocent people.

I agree wholeheartedly. I live on the east side (Cottonwood Heights). I lived in WVC for about six months right after I got out of college (about 35 years ago -- I guess it wasn't even technically WVC at that time), and I personally hated every minute of it. Still, some of the posts on this thread are unbelievably intolerant and bigoted. The decent residents of WVC don't deserve this kind of stigma.

Ya. If people are looking to get away from crime. They also need to avoid Midvale(West side) and magna. I don't know if you people have heard. But Magna was rated as one of the top gang areas in the country or some ****.

I have to disagree with your comments regarding Granger. I know two families that have switched their kids from Copper Hills to Granger. I didn't understand why they did it, but they both felt that the Granite School District had more to offer than the Jordan School District.

To each their own. I have visited the school during school time and spoken with friends who pulled their kids out of there and I certainly would not ever recommend anyone send their kids there. IMHO, Copper Hills is ghetto because it's redneck school, white blue-collar workers. Granger is ghetto because they are overwhelmed with immigrants and minorities that suck up all the resources and energy from the teachers. I'd avoid both schools. Just look at the stats on both schools and they are near the bottom in the valley.
