I currently live in St. George. I am finishing up my Associate's Degree at the college here then transferring to the U of U next fall or winter. My partner and I have 3 children who are currently in a charter school down here. I have heard there are many charter schools up north. But I am wondering how the regular schools fair.

Ideally we would like to live close to the University, preferrably in the Avenues or Sugarhouse. If we can't make the lottery into a close charter school, how are the public schools in those neighborhoods?

Also as far as jobs go, my partner is Programmer/Web Designer. And I am a Massage Therapist, though will only be working part time while pursuing my Linguistics degree.

Any other neighborhoods we should look into or other things we should consider? We aren't looking to buy until I am out of school. We are heavily involved in outdoor activities, snowboarding, camping, biking, etc. So Utah so far has been a good fit for us.

Thanks for any input!

Public schools in Sugar House and the Avenues, while still suffering from Utah's poor per-pupil spending, are considered quite good.

If I were you, I would also consider Central City, as it's as close to the U as the Avenues, has some very nice areas, and is much more affordable. Plus, if you're in the right area of Central City, you have TRAX access directly to the U.

I'd stick w/Avenues or Sugar House personally. Great areas. check out greatschools . net to check on individual schools. There are a lot of excellent schools with very well educated parents (key to achieving children).

Thank you! I have not heard of Central City, but I will look into it. I know Sugarhouse and Avenues are a bit more spendy, but I have always loved those neighborhoods from the few times that I have been to SLC. I will check out the school link as well.
