I live in Midway, Wasatch county, about a 15 min. drive to the new hospital at PC you can live here, either renting or buying, for as cheap as you can in SLC. The drive on I-80 can be treacherous during a winter storm, it is steep with a lot of large commercial trucks.
You don't need a 4wd or awd vehicle but having one makes the winter driving safer.

I have a friend who drove this commute for years and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It limits your life too much. You probably wouldn't socialize or do things with your coworkers because you would have to make the dreaded commute an extra time. And in the winter, it's a real issue even though they do an excellent job keeping Parley's clean. In PKC, snow season is about 1/2 the year.

PKC and the surrounding area is beautiful. PKC itself can be spendy but there are other areas close by that are more affordable. And you wouldn't have that canyon to drive every day. You would get to live above the inversion and SLC is still close enough for shopping or anything else you couldn't find locally.

Before you decide to make that drive every day, I hope you check out all your other alternatives. Get a map and a compass. Use PKC as your center and draw a circle that includes SLC. There's your area to search for possible places to live. I'm thinking you can find a reasonable place to live that's much closer to work. When you are planning out expenses, don't forget you will need a vehicle in tip top condition for that commute.
