Hello!! I have never been to Utah and been born and raised in Nevada. Recently my husband got offered an amazing opportunity but will require us to move to Utah. His position will be based in Orem but he mentioned looking for housing near Alpine. I have searched craigslist but haven't found many available rentals. We have a large dog which I am not willing to leave behind and not wanting to buy until we have lived there for a little bit. I have been talking to many people who were familar with the area and am getting more nervous. I am a Christian and hoping to be involved in a Christian church nearby. We have a son who will be entering middle school as well. I am nervous about people discriminating against our family, especially our son because we are not LDS? My husband was raised LDS but has not practiced in quite a while. Anyone had any experience with this? Or any ideas of great places to rent or church to attend? Thanks!!

Oh we will also be visiting the area while he meets with his company next week...hoping to get a better feel by then!

The area is predominately LDS, but I think you'd fit in OK, especially being Christian as well. The area of Provo / Orem has over 200,000 so there's many different types of churches. As for rentals, you'll probably find those in the Provo and Orem cities mostly, as smaller areas like Alpine are mostly owned houses.

One great place to look that us 'locals' know about is ksl.com, check out the classifieds there.

Seriously, you should be fine. My only word of advise is to not play up what you consider to be a distinction between us (Mormons) and you (Christians). I was only five years old when a little neighbor boy, who had obviously been prompted by his parents, told me that he was a Christian but I wasn't. I thought he was nuts, but I have since learned to expect that kind of thinking. If you personally don't believe Mormons to be Christians, that's your prerogative. I'm just trying to give you a heads up when it comes to having your son fit in. If he tells the LDS kids he meets that he's a Christian but that they aren't, you can expect problems. Otherwise, I don't think you have anything to worry about. There are, by the way, dozens and dozens and dozens of Christian Churches in the Salt Lake area. Whether you're looking for a specific denomination (i.e. Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Lutheran, etc.) or a non-denominational church, you should have no problem whatsoever finding one.

Thanks! I am definitely not "afraid" of being surrounded by Mormons like many I have read on some of these threads. I welcome the change in scenery and the family oriented place to raise our family. We don't talk much about religion within our family mainly because my husband and I don't particularly follow either. I attend a non denominational church here locally and I would assume that if someone asked my son what he was, he would probably say he isn't anything! I love what LDS stands for with their family values and I am excited to live in an area that promotes that rather than drinking and gambling like they do here!! I did look on that website and found many great rentals! Thanks so much for your advice!! I look forward to come explore your area next week and possibly make a move within the next couple of months!!

WOW!! We really liked the area! We really liked the Highland/Alpine area but very few rentals available. We won't be able to buy a home for two years because of our current home in Nevada. It looks like I may be able to transfer to a position in Taylorsville and he would work in Orem. Anyone know of some areas to look for houses that would be right in between? That way we would both commute but not too far. HE submitted a proposal to the prospective employer so we should know this week!! And the really cool thing is we found a church that is just beginning out there and the pastor came from my hometown! We are really excited and feel like all the doors are opening for us!!

Well it looks like Utah will be our new home!! I have searched the rental market on ksl.com (thanks to your help!) and we believe we have found some nice ones. Are some schools better than others? We have a 13 year old son so looking for a solid middle school and high school. I am willing to live anywhere that has the best school districts. If anyone has some insight on what schools are better, I would really appreciate it!! My husband and I can live anywhere, I just want to make sure our son has a good school in a neighborhood with kids! Thanks!

Most of the areas have decent schools. Somewhere in between the two cities you mentioned (Orem and Taylorsville) would be Lehi, Draper, and possibly South Jordan.
