Here's another tip. Big mountains, east. Little mountains, west. Whenever you get turned around, you can always reorient yourself.
Same. I don't have a good sense of direction, but there's no way I could get lost around here. It's one of the things I like about living here.

Default Not Here

There are lots of shortcuts and easier routes. I'm not sure locals like to share that information much. It's a heck of a lot better than pre-Olympics or even before Trax.

Katz, thanks for your PM yesterday. One thing is certain, I wouldn't post about that subject in this thread!

Sounds like more metros should follow it. Chicago has a coordinate system that some, but not all, suburbs follow. New York has numbered streets and avenues but the East-West baseline is fifth!

thank you for explaining this so well. I'm moving to Utah in 2 months and while I know it should make sense, until you explained it, I was lost! So thanks for the info!

Default GPS and Private Cars

Agreed on the GPS issue. It can be a little tricky, especially up in the Davis County area where it will flip the street numbers without telling you. There's a road through the industrial area in Clearfield which likes to play tricks on people.

Sometimes the easiest thing to do is get a car service a. If you're really not sure where to go or don't want to deal with driving, that's probably the best bet.

Thanks Katz ! Worked great for us while in the area... SLC traffic BTW is not bad BUT... South Jordan for some reason seems to really stink!

Wow, that sounds nice and logical. I wish my city was like that. Instead, here you have to figure out which of the three separate roads with the exact same name you're looking for.

It really is easy once you get the hang of it. It seems daunting at first, but in reality it's really easy. Example:

In Colorado Springs I live at 2350 Bluegrass Dr. (not a real address). We put the block numbers on our street signs. "2350" equates to the number of blocks I am west of Wahsatch Ave. On the corner of the two closest streets in my neighborhood, the sign indicates I'm at 5700 blocks north of Colorado Ave. So in Utah, my address could be 2350 West, 5700 North. Using this method you can almost find anything without a map. Actually, quite ingenious.

Have a great day!

When in doubt, use one of the million naviagtion apps, or ask a local. It makes sense with a little time. Also, the mountain trick people mentioned is a life saver. As a local who has lived here my whole life I never remember where north is when I travel because I start with the mountains to the East.
