So, one of the local stations is reporting this morning that one of the men listed as AWOL is sitting in jail for an "improper visa". 1) If he were here to do training with our military then how does the visa suddenly become improper? 2) If he is sitting in jail then why was he listed as AWOL (in the sense that the media story implies). Yes, if in jail he is still AWOL but the reason is known.

Visa's can be canceled if the person has violated the terms in some way.

Don't hold your breath, I've asked for the same several times and have yet to get any substantial evidence to support those comments...

An update from a New York Times article today...

Quote:
Afghan Soldiers Went AWOL in Texas

HOUSTON If the 17 foreign soldiers who walked away from language training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio had been from, say, Guatemala or Kenya, they probably would not have received much attention. Military officials say it is not uncommon for officers visiting from countries where life is hard to get a glimpse of the American dream while studying here and go absent without leave.

But the 17 officers who deserted between 2006 and this year were all from Afghanistan, and in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Fort Hood last fall, that fact belatedly raised eyebrows among military and law enforcement officials who track terrorists.

break

On Friday, an Air Force spokeswoman, Capt. Rose Richeson, said all but 4 of the 17 men had been accounted for. She declined to say which four were still missing, or what the Air Force believed had happened to them.

Of the 13 found defectors, 4 had already been arrested by immigration officials and were being held in federal detention centers awaiting deportation, Captain Richeson said, adding that they were in custody long before the notice was issued. (One of the jailed men, Mohamed Fahim Faquier, 23, has married a woman in San Antonio and is seeking residency.)

Eight others had crossed into Canada, Captain Richeson said. Six had requested asylum and two had been granted permanent residency permits by Canadian authorities.

One man has obtained legal residency status in the United States. (full story)
Cheers! M2

The left hand and the right hand should exchange email addresses or phone numbers. They might have other occasions where they need to know what the other is doing.

Oh, and this part was particularly hilarious...

Quote:
Some of the Afghan deserters did not bother to keep a low profile. At least seven of them had Facebook accounts suggesting rather run-of-the-mill interests for young men. I am a playa cuz I am SMOOTH with the girls, wrote Shawali Kakar, 20, on his page, though he added with bravado: I am a commando training to be a pilot.

It appears another one may have "jumped the fence" at Lackland, I just received an Awareness Bulleting dated 1 July for a missing international military student from Afghanistan who wasn't one of the original 17 that went missing!

I gotta tell you, this guy would/could blend in well with the general SA populace, as he almost looks Hispanic!

I wouldn't want to go back to Afghanistan either. At least, they don't appear to be terrorists, just guys who got a little taste of Texas and now want the whole keg.
