I live off of 1560, with a big field behind my house. Last night, multiple times, I heard this crazy sound... it sounded like an elephant. My dogs were barking, but also shaking with fear. It was intense. What the heck was it?

I though it could be a javelina, but I can't find a video of one screaming or howling to confirm.

Any ideas? It was a howl, like a coyote, but different.... my screetchy.

Hopefully not a cougar, one of those was hit by a car up on 10 a couple years ago and they are allegedly making a comeback.

There are bobcats all over this area, which do sound "screechy". Also feral hogs, which are much larger than javelinas and sound very different.

Well, the sound bit sounds a lot like what I heard, but the sounds were more drawn out. Like an elephant raising it's trunk to the sky and making that noise. The same noise, but much longer in duration. Feral hogs and bobcats and cougars...OH MY!

I did see a big black dead pig/hog/javelina on the side of FM1560 not too many weeks back... thought it was a dog at first. Not sure exactly which it was, but some sort of piggy!

I've seen several in that area, but usually closer to Govt Canyon. I have a friend who lives in Kallison Ranch who has had a devil of a time with the wild hogs tearing up his yard and whatnot.

With all the development going on out there, it's not surprising as these animals are being forced out of their natural habitats. I suspect many of them are heading towards the state natural area, but what's going to happen when their population overcomes the territory?

Yeah... the field behind my house is basically walking distance to Govt. Canyon. There is a lot of development. I feel guilty buying a house over here and wish they would stop building!

This thread decreases my already low motivation to live rurally.

Now that you've got yours, right? It's an never-ending problem - folks want development to stop....once they're where they want to be! Not picking on ya - it's human nature!
