DoD Military Working Dog is looking for Foster Families!!
Worldwide need for detection dogs has increased dramatically. The Department of Defense Military Working Dog Breeding program breeds to meet the growing requirement for security at home and abroad. A large part of the success of this program is dependent upon volunteers to provide temporary homes for developing puppies.
The 341st Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base operates a breeding program for military working dogs in support of the Department of Defense Military Working Dog program. These dogs are a vital part of our national defense and serve in Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps units around the globe. You can become part of this important effort by volunteering your home and time to raise a military working dog.
Who can help?
We are looking for families that:
- Have the time and patience to raise a young puppy from twelve weeks to six months of age
- Have a home that will provide a stimulating and safe environment for a young puppy - no children under the age of 4.
- Have the desire and interest to learn how to raise a future military working dog
- Live within a 2 hour drive of Lackland AFB

My wife and I want to do it, but we'd want to keep the dog.
We're huge animal lovers, I'm AD Air Force and her dad was a K-9 officer for 10 years. It's an awesome cause but I know we'd get too attached. We're softies.

We would love to foster... We already have a Belgian Malinois as a family pet and we LOVE the breed... However, we have 3 kids and I don't know if they, or my husband for that matter, would be able to let the pup go after 6 months...

I would love to answer any questions you may have. Also, if you'd like, you can send me an email, and I can send you the program guidebook. This gives you an idea of what is asked of you as a foster family.
For those of you so say you would not be able to return the puppy, you would be surprised. I'll admit your first puppy is the hardest to foster, however with the assistance of the Breeding Program Staff, you are coached in how not to treat the puppy and how to set the puppy up for success within the DoD system.

We just got a Belgian Malinois yesterday...what a pretty dog! She seems to be getting along with our English Lab pretty well. I really didn't want another dog, but I know I will be sad when she goes back on base. I know our dog will like the company

I foster animals currently for our local shelter. I can assure anyone you do get attatched to the animals but as long as you tell yourself and the animals often that this is just their temporary home and they will have people who will love them the same or more in their lives and will be well taken care of when they leave you it makes it easier to let them go. I have actually seen one of the dogs we took care of after he had to have one of his eyes taken and some skin problems we helped him get used to not seeing things on one side and when I saw the person walking him I pulled over and he remembered me and it was great to see how happy he was. I have taken care of anything from 3 day old puppies (2) and a week old group of kittens (4) to get them old enough to go to forever homes it is rewarding and I am always eager to go pick up the next ones when needed.

My husband and I are very interested in participating in this program. I believe we meet all the criteria, the only issue is being 2 hrs from Lackland, we would be cutting it very close. Not getting attached might be an issue but I believe we could handle it, that is if this program is still in force.
