I know one place they get that large - up in the mountains in Hawaii. One of the soldiers in my old unit got bit on the head by one and went into anaphylactic shock. We couldn't get the sucker to let go. I had to bayonet the critter and the troop was transported to the hospital where they removed the head (of the centipede).

Probably but you can def get it at Shades of Green on Sunset. Couple weeks ago I found a ton of tiny little centipedes in my back yard. First instint was to take them out so that they would not hurt my the rosemary oddly though they were next to the rosemary bush but didn't bother it at all! They were munching on a weed that sprouted next to it so I let them be! Rosemary: still fine. weed: all gone! Guess they moved to the next one. Not a big bug killer or pesticide user here.

we would like something not too toxic for our kids and pets (but obviously want the centipedes and scorpions gone).

(and, before you ask- yes, I did look at the threads on pest control, but the only one I found that specifically addressed centipedes was 1 post asking the question, and 3 pages of discussion about how scary centipedes are).
One of these should do the trick.

I'm with ScubaSteve! those bugs you either have to spray them with some sort of acid, set them on fire, or simply stomp away. I tried spraying one with Ortho's poison and It did not do anything to it. be careful of their bite though. the area becomes infected almost all of the time! and a centi bite comes with a curse too.

Just throw 'em on the grill. Or feed 'em to a tarantula.
