Tony, now that I think about it, KXZL may have started around 83/84? But it wasn't a blood relative of KEXL so to speak.

Can't forget about some of the R&B/Urban Contemporary radio in San Antonio such as KAPE-1480, that lasted until somewhere around the mid to late 80's and they flipped to Gospel as KCHL which stands to this day.
R&B Music came back to the airwaves with KSJL-760 between 1992-1994, then the format moved over to FM on 96.1 giving San Antonio it's first R&B station on the FM dial at the time. Clear Channel purchased KSJL-96.1 moved the R&B format to the rimshot signal on 92.5 and simulcasted on AM 810. 92.5 is now Country and AM 810 is now Contemporary Christian. To this day there is no R&B station in San Antonio. The only closet thing in the market today is Hip Hop stations KBBT-98.5 The Beat and KPWT-Power 106.7, also Jammin' Oldies KTFM Jammin 94.1

80s/90s San Antonio FM
Random memories:
99.5 KISS "rude awakening" in 84 Lisle/Hahn
Class-FM also 84, DJs "Cat Simon", "Tequila," morning show did practical jokes called "bun burners"
KESI Star-106 adult contemp around 1984-87. Originally 106.3, moved to 106.7, became KMMX. maybe David Munoz worked there?
KXZL Winston & Alyce debut in 86, station later renamed KZEP.
KISS around 1990 changed format briefly to oldies ("Kool gold") & fired all but 1 DJ. Steve Hahn read news for KMMX for awhile.
96 Rock filled the void until KISS returned to rock in 92 and rehired Lisle/Hahn.
"Texas Radio" station played local country/rock for short time.
101.9 known as K-Q-1-0-snooze. Played elevator muzak. Switched to current lite pop format around 94.
Magic 105, Rio & Reyes for a few years in the 90s, then Sonny Melendrez for a few more.

What a great thread with lots of memory joggers. There were a few jocks I really enjoyed from KITY 92.9: Elvis Duran and Linda Garcia. I know Elvis went on to be famous in New York City, but what of Linda Garcia?
Also, this is certainly more recent but maybe someone knows - what ever happened to Cindy Casiano (she was originally with Drex then moved on to do news at KENS-TV) and whatever happened to the gal who followed her, Roberta Varella. After being booted from Drex's show, she did some KTSA work then onto traffic at KENS TV. Any idea what happened to her?

I remember listening to KONO in the early 90's with George Super Cooper, a very nice guy.

..and Howard Edwards on KONO in the 60s. Went to school with his daughter at Glenoaks.
Howards was up against Bruce Hathaway on KTSA mornings.

Ktfm, Ksaq, & Ktsa
In the mid-70's, KTFM had this midnight DJ that went by the name Trigger Black. At midnight on most nights, they would play a select album non-stop and without commercials so that everyone could record it. But under FCC rules, no one was supposed to record it so these terms were never used.
KSAQ 100 was another top 40 station in that era popularly monikered "Q-100." And KTSA has been around forever as I used to listen to it clearly in Victoria.

Hey TCS!
I asked Nick St. John to tell me more about the ladies who were the jocks back then..since FM was in its infancy I thought hearing the stories of the ladies of that time would be interesting, probably historic - he has been writing me some of that info - I just haven't put it on the page yet.
Last week I also got an email from KEXL jock Bobby Reyes. Bobby emailed back a list of KEXL jocks and where they are today - I need to post that also.
I have two tapes in hand that I haven't logged yet and according to my notes I have two other tapes that are missing to complete the set. (what box are they in???)
Allen Grimm was one of the key KEXL jocks. Allen died a few years ago. Recently I got a very special email from his niece who stumbled upon my site and found it very special for her to be able to hear his voice again. Her email really touched me.
