S.A. Radio remembrances
Yet another neat thread! Here's what I remember, going AM to FM and left to right on the dial.
AM
55 KTSA - I clearly remember them playing Top 40 until '83 or '84 when they went to talk. Sonny Rio worked evenings during the week nights when I had the radio on while doing homework. Anyone remember the promotion in '81 or so called the "KTSA Black Box" in which folks had to solve clues and figure out what was in the Black Box? I still can hear Logan Stewart wrapping up his commentaries by saying "That's my time, thanks for yours."
KKYX - Great Country 68 KKYX is still a classic after all these years. I do remember the noontime news with Ken Carter. Tino Esquivel was a staple in the evenings for many years.
AM 76 KSJL - They played Top 40 in the mid to late 80s. Reception was often lousy outside of 410.
KRNN 930 - Radio News Network
KENS-AM 1160 - Texas Music for a good while before going Disney and then news/talk. They had high school football games for a while with the legendary Gary DeLaune calling play by play.
WOAI - Hard to believe they had farm and ranch reports with Bill McReynolds until 2000 when Rush came.
FM
92.9 KITY/KSRR - Listened to both of these when they were adult contemporary. Power 93 had Trey Ware doing morning drive fo a while.
96.1 KSAQ (Q96) - Dave Shropshire in the mornings. Anyone remember his song which played after Jane Waldman's newscasts around 7:30 or so?
KLLS 100.3 (Class 100) - Catherine Block and Dave Griffith were two of their deejays. Adult contemporary format before becoming Y100.
KQXT FM 102 - That's what you heard in a low male voice before the elevator music came on. Couldn't stand much of it then unless something familiar was played yet the format is an eerily nostalgic footnote in SA radio.
HOT KTFM 103 - Joe Nasty, Dr Drex and the gang. Didn't listen often but it was good at times, especially with Drex in the evenings.
Magic 105 - Listened lots when they first started in '84 or '85. I think Mike Roberts was one of their original voices and I remember Glenn Martin too.
MIX 106 (KMMX 106.7) - Another face in the crowded adult contemporary scene before they became Smooth Jazz 106.7 in the 90s.
KCCW - I don't remember the dial location for this one but they played country...
KBUC - an early favorite. Didn't listen to Ricci and Jud in the mornings as I was at school but I have fun memories of Gene Kelly and Jerry Franklin during afternoon drive. Dad would come home from work each day at 5:30 and he'd sit in the car and listen as Gene would read TV listings for mythical station KINK while Jerry laughed uncontrollably. For many years, Gene was the PA announcer for NEISD high school football games at Comalander Stadium. Both Gene and Jerry have since passed on.
I don't remember what station Watson Gelks and Pat Tallman did morning drive. Wat and Pat have both passed away as well; Pat Tallman is remembered by long-time Spurs fans as being the PA announcer at Hemisfair Arena until cancer got the best of him. I still can hear his booming baritone voice getting the Baseline Bums going.
KMAC - don't remember much about them except their clocks. One was at Olmos Pharmacy for years. Don't know where others are.

Gene Kelly also did some TV announcing for Joe Blanchard's Southwest Championship Wreestling in the early 80's.

Also on KONO was Rod Tanner "old weird Rod running around the inside of your radio" KONO also had that remote station called the Alamobile. I read somewhere that all the DJ's hated it.

Radio booth inside the North Star Mall boots
Years ago KTSA did annual remotes from a small booth perched atop one of the boots at North Star Mall. When the booth was not being used, it was lowered into a boot until it needed to be used again. The top of this booth was still visible inside the boot as late as mid-2004. Anyone know if the booth is still there after the recent boot makeover? It may be visible from the parking garages.

KEXL website updated. I think since the last time I left a comment I've been very fortunate to get in contact with Sam Kindrick and Nick St. John and they both really like the KEXL tribute website. I've added a number of things so don't forget to check in every once in a while if you were a listener back in the 70's. remembering KEXL San Antonio 104.5 1970's

Your website is looking better and better, I just wish I could listen to those audio clips, I'm on a webtv unit, and they just cant handle it. let me ask you, I'm 36, so I never really listened to KEXL, but when I listened to 104, it was called KXZL. what year did KEXL go to KXZL?

Many thanks Jay for putting that website together. KEXL was my all time favorite radio station. It's great that someone had the forethought to grab some on tape. Listoning to those clips really takes me back. When KEXL went off the air they had a "Goodbye KEXL Concert" I believe at Olmos Park. I had to work that day so, of course, I called in sick and went to the concert. Me and a freind of mine were walking through the crowd when someone took our picture. I found out the next day that it was a newspaper photographer. The next day there, bigger than Dallas, was a picture on the front of the paper of me at the at the concert. I was sure I was going to get fired but I never heard anything about it. I always suspected my boss couldn't read.

Tony, KEXL was shut down seems like about 1978 and became KITE-FM. KXZL was seems like about 10 years later. KEXL ran from about 1971 through 1978 +- a few years.
They may have chosen the letters KXZL to resemble KEXL phonetically and politically but it was quite a few years later. I'm almost 50 now...yuk!
Bob, great to hear about that! That is a great story! Do you still have the newspaper article and photo? That would be great to include that on the site.
I guess I have about 50 cassette tapes from that timeframe - I remember my mother telling me "Why don't you reuse those tapes instead of continuing to buy more tapes!" Thank goodness I didn't listen to her too often - she also told me to take accounting classes in case computers were just a fad.
