San Antonio's zoo must be really bad, because it made the top 10 worst zoos in the world.

S.A. Zoo dissed on worst-of list; officials say it's 'preposterous' | kens5.com | San Antonio News, Weather, Sports, Traffic, Entertainment, Video and Photos

I went to the zoo recently (part of a school field trip). It was my first time to SA's zoo..generally I don't like zoo's--the idea of animals kept in cages is not my cup of tea...but the habitats seemed really well planned out, and they had some interactive stuff going with the kids.

There was a lot of griping last year in this forum about the situation with the elephants. It was mentioned in the explanation of SA Zoo's ranking and it appears that this survey put a lot of emphasis on animal housing and care issues.

I have seen the zoo on tv, the elephant habitat looks horrible.

The elephant habitat is bad. That's about the only thing bad about the zoo, though. I wouldn't put much stock into what some person who has likely not even been to the zoo has to say about it. Probably some nitwit in a cubicle somewhere was told to make a best/worst list, Googled a bit, saw an article about the one bad aspect of San Antonio's zoo, and that was that. It was probably a toss-up between our bad elephant habitat and some zoo that only offers two flavors of sno-cones.

Oh no, not again! Yes the elephant exhibit is somewhat small and probably needs to be updated, but this does not make the San Antonio Zoo worse than zoos in places like Pyoungyang and Kabul. Get some perspective people. The animals in our zoo are not being eaten, shot or made to fight each other for sport. Its a nice little zoo, with some good exhibits. It has pretty landscaping and is well maintained, with a good variety of animals that are in general well taken care of.

Our Zoo is AZA accredited, which means it is regularly inspected and approved. It's not some kind of roadside petting zoo where the animals are kept chained to the wall and poked with sticks.

I just "love" to hear that something is the best/worst in the world. Did that someone who stated that really travel around the world and saw all the zoo's on his list? Is the treatment of elephants the main analysis factor of this statistic?
