Default Hill Country~opinions?

Hi,
We have friends and family in the TX Hill Country and on the outskirts of it. I am curious as to what it's like to raise children there.

My youngest son has a disability so I am very interested in special ed services in the schools as well.

The "Hill Country" spans many counties, so you'll need to be more specific by naming cities or some portion of a county.

As for special ed services, the quality of any aspect of K-12 education depends on the school district. Most Hill Country counties are rural and cash-strapped, so the specialized services and resources many of them would have to offer won't compare well to the large districts in San Antonio. The exceptions would be the ones that are bedroom communities to Austin and San Antonio: places like Boerne and Dripping Springs, that have excellent schools.

Thanks very much! I seem to keep hearing about Dripping Springs. Is it a pricey area to find a house in?

The Hill Country towns I was interested in are Fredericksburg and New Braunfels.

Dripping Springs is much closer to Austin than San Antonio. The Austin forum would be a better place to find expert opinions. My general perception is that it is pricey and growing very fast. FWIW, Boerne can be pricey, too.

We just moved to Fredericksburg and I have enrolled my kids in the public elementary. So far, I like what I've seen. Unlike some school systems, FBG is not cash strapped but we get some of that money diverted due to the Robin Hood law . I know there is a gifted program starting in grade K (!!) and I am impressed that they are able to offer science, computer, art, music, and gym at the elementary multiple times per week. For comparison, the very wealthy school district we came from didn't even have an art budget. Parents took over the job of art instruction and did the best they could.

Anyway, I should have a better feel for how things are going in a couple months. Feel free to email or message me any time and I can give you my initial impressions of raising a family here.

Some people that live in far northeastern Medina County (near Medina Lake) are in the hill country and Northside ISD. Here is NISD's Special Education Programs pamphlet:
