It has been over a year since I have been back to SA and that part of the city, and you are right those two spaces have been leased. Even though occupied space is better than vacant storefonts, I would not consider The Habitat for Humanity Home Center, 99 Cent Only and Harbor Frieght and Tool leading a retail turn around of Walzem Road.

The Rackspace deal is the catalyst generate some development, but I think the verdict is still out on if it will affect the retail climate of the area. Most of the retail that was along Walzem or in Windsor Park moved on to The Forum and Rolling Oaks. Given that the areas economic recovery is still a long way off.

BTW, Willsatx, I do remember Gallagher's Steak House . . . from mid-range steak house to EZ Pawn. So sad.

The afrikan amerikans really did a number on the Northeast side of S.A. It started when I moved away back in the mid 80's. Then became completely infested and run down. Windcrest was essentially a gated community surrounded by some of the worst crime nay for the south side.
Glad to see it has seen it's worst days. I remember seeing WPM going up. I saw Darth Vader and Jamie Farr there. Nice memories. Nacho's at Chelsea Street Pub anyone. How about Mr. Dunderbak's!!!

Cheers

Tron Ruled!!!! I saw West World at that theater! It was the best. Games were a quarter and there a hundred of them. What was the name of the one where you ran over people with a doon buggy and turned them into headstones.., CLASSIC!!!! Chick-Fil-A, Orange Julius, Morrow's Nut House, Joske's, County Seat, .., each anchor store had there own toy store.., so Christmas time was magical seeing all the toy set-ups. Thanks for the memories!

Default Windcrest Annexation

Great info on Walzem, Rackspace etc. Do y'all know of any plans for annexation? I live about 1 mile outside of Windcrest in a neighborhood that's no so great. I'll be mighty upset if I move then Windcrest Annexes the area and fixes it up.

A couple of years ago, I read something about plans to annex a pretty good portion of the surrounding areas - I think all the way our Miller Rd. What ever happened to that?

According to the Windcrest city website, as well as signs on Eisenhauer and Walzem Rds, Windcrest annexed the vacant land on the northside of Eisenhauer betw I-35 and Midcrown, territory on southside Walzem from I-35 to Midcrown, and the eastside I-35 frontage betw Walzem and Eisenhauer.

I'm doing research on this for my Urban Planning courses and hope to find out a lot more.

The latest on the annexation is that the land swap has taken place between the Cities of San Antonio and Windcrest, allowing the cities to move forward with a bold New Urbanism development, "Windcrest Village." There is a very concise article about the design charette for the development, which was led by noted architect Andres Duany, written by local design critic Mike Greenberg. The article is found at the following URL:
